Emma Navarro opened up about her showdown against Peyton Stearns in Australian Open 1R
In the post-match press conference, Emma Navarro reflected on her match against her compatriot Peyton Stearns in the first round at the Australian Open 2025. It was a tough-fought win for Navarro, who was delighted about having gained momentum in the early stages of the tournament.
"I think those are some of the most rewarding matches and some of the matches where you learn the most about yourself and about your game. So I think it's definitely super valuable to have those early in the tournament. Yeah, I'll definitely take some confidence from today going into my next round," Emma Navarro said.
Along with this, the 23-year-old also admitted that she did not portray her best tennis during the match but used all her mental toughness to attain the victory.
"One of the more unique matches I've played in a while, I think. Definitely did not have my best stuff today. Yeah, it was just relying a lot, I guess, on my grit and toughness and fight. I think, yeah, she (Stearns) had a lot of moments there where she could have maybe closed it out or run away with it. I just tried to stay really tough."
Emma Navarro is currently ranked World No. 8 by the WTA, with her best performance at a Major being a semifinal appearance at the 2024 US Open.
She will now face Wang Xiyu in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday, January 16. In her first round, the Chinese got past Julia Grabher with ease, defeating the Austrian 6-1,7-5. The two have faced each other once, with Navarro coming out on top (at the 2024 Australian Open).
