19th seed Emma Navarro will take on this year's French Open runner-up Jasmine Paolini in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon 2024 on Tuesday, July 9. The American beat World No. 2 Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-3 to advance to her maiden Major quarterfinal.
Navarro previously staged a comeback to oust Diana Shnaider in three sets in the third round. She knocked out Naomi Osaka in the second round, and eased past Wang Qiang in the first round.
Paolini advanced to her second consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal after Madison Keys retired towards the end of their fourth-round contest. The American led 5-2 in the decider but sustained an injury that severely restricted her gameplay. She served for the match twice, and after failing to do so, decided to retire.
That doesn't take away anything from Paolini, who played some great tennis against Keys, as well as throughout the tournament. She previously defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo, Greet Minnen, and Bianca Andreescu in straight sets.
Navarro has a perfect winning record against Paolini, having beaten the Italian in all three of their previous encounters. She won their first two matches in straight sets, while their most recent showdown at this year's Miami Open went to three sets. This will be their first match on grass.
Both players have risen to the top this year. While Paolini is currently ahead of Navarro, the latter seems poised to steal her thunder. With a semifinal spot up for grabs, this promises to be a nail-biting encounter. On that note, here are all the details about their upcoming showdown:
