Emma Raducanu's opening-round defeat to Cristina Busca at the 2025 Singapore Tennis Open has garnered negative reactions from tennis fans. They have expressed their disappointment at the Brit's run of underwhelming form.
Raducanu became an overnight sensation at the age of 18 when she clinched the 2021 US Open title as a qualifier. However, since then, she has had a hard time emulating that success and is trying to climb back up to the upper echelons of tennis. Though she boasted two big wins at the Australian Open, the Brit was decimated 1-6, 0-6 by Iga Swiatek.
Following her defeat, Emma Raducanu entered the Singapore Tennis Open as the seventh seed and played Cristina Busca in the opening round. The Spaniard claimed a resilient 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 win from a set down after three hours and two minutes.
Fans were distraught as Emma Raducanu's struggles persisted. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) called the 22-year-old the 'biggest fraud.'
"Emma Raducanu is the biggest fraud of this sport, 100% real no fake," the fan stated.
Another fan wrote:
"Raducanu is the worst grand slam winner of all time!"
Here are some other reactions from tennis fans with one reminding everyone how Raducanu is currently working without a coach.
"Emma Raducanu loses to the world number 101?? who has no sponsor, no coach, has to buy her own tennis clothes and equipment Tip your heads back all together now.. and go HA," a fan quipped.
"They sit you down and force you to watch emma raducanu tennis in hell by the way," a fan joked.
"Remember she's coachless again as Nick Cavaday wants to focus on family time without stress. She needs to find stability in that coaching setup," a fan pointed out.
"Her game is a mess. Too many meaningless ground strokes that land too short, and a backhand defensive slice that loops into the air to be put away every time. And no footwork on the baseline resulting in a hoiked forehand," a fan opined.
Emma Raducanu's 2025 season is off to a poor start
Emma Raducanu was slated to kick her 2025 off at the ASB Classic in Auckland so that she could get some time to adjust her rhythm ahead of the Australian Open. However, she had to pull out of the tournament due to a back issue.
Though she managed to return for the Australian Open and collected two wins, she was crushed by Iga Swiatek in the third round following which she suffered an opening round defeat in Singapore.
Making things worse, Raducanu also split up with her coach Nick Cavaday whom she was working with for over a year. Cavaday was having a hard time managing the extensive schedule and decided to take a break to get himself back to 100%.
