Emma Raducanu opened up about her chances of success against former World No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the ongoing 2025 Australian Open. The Brit set up a third-round encounter against the Pole after successfully dealing with the challenge of Amanda Anisimova in the second round of the prestigious hardcourt Grand Slam.
2021 US Open champion Raducanu produced an impressive display against Anisimova, particularly when it came to converting her break point opportunities. Raducanu won 8 out of her 10 break points to eventually register a 6-3, 7-5 win over the American. The daunting prospect of facing five-time Major winner Iga Swiatek now awaits the Brit.
During her post-match, on-court interview, Raducanu looked forward to her matchup against the former No. 1, saying:
"It’ll be a good match for me. Any match I can play against these top opponents.. I’m loving it. It’s an opportunity to test my game and see where I’m at. We played twice before on clay. Let’s see on hard court. She’s achieved so much already. Going into it, I have nothing to lose. I’m just gonna swing. I’m gonna give it my best. I can’t wait to play in front of you guys."
Raducanu and Swiatek have faced each other on three previous occasions on the WTA Tour. Ominously for Raducanu in terms of her 2025 Australian Open chances against the Pole, Swiatek emerged victorious on all three occasions.
Emma Raducanu is yet to take a set off of Iga Swiatek across three WTA Tour-level meetings
The 2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart marked the first WTA Tour-level clash between Emma Raducanu and Iga Swiatek, and concluded with a routine 6-4, 6-4 win for the Pole in the quarterfinals. The pair's next meeting came at the 2023 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Once again, it was Swiatek who came out on top, this time with an even more convincing 6-3, 6-1 win in the Round of 16.
Their latest encounter, at the 2024 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, was a much tighter affair than their first two matchups. However, it still was the Pole who won the match 7-6(2), 6-3.
Swiatek herself has enjoyed a brilliant campaign so far at the 2025 Australian Open. The World No. 2 dispatched Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-4, in the first round, and followed it up with another dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Rebecca Sramkova in the second.
