Kim Clijsters speculated about Emma Raducanu having the wrong people in her team. The Belgian believes the Brit's scheduling decisions leading up to the 2024 US Open were incorrect and fans agreed with her remarks.
Raducanu showed promise at the Wimbledon Championships this year as she reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time since her 2021 US Open triumph. In the hardcourt swing, she reached the quarterfinal of the Citi Open but did not play any more tournaments before the US Open.
At the New York Major, the Brit was beaten by Sofia Kenin in three sets in the first round. During a recent episode of 'Served with Andy Roddick' podcast Clijsters and Roddick disapproved of the 21-year-old's scheduling.
The three-time US Open champion stated that she does not know Raducanu or her team personally but was obvious that there was "some misguidance there".
Clijsters' comments were posted on Reddit and fans agreed with her. They were surprised with the decision-making as well.
"It was crazy that she played literally zero warm up tournaments and then somehow didn’t expect to fail miserably?" one fan asked.
"I don’t think anyone disputes that the tournament choices have been bad, but who is making them is the bigger question," another fan wrote.
One fan recalled that she fired her coach, Andrew Richardson, soon after winning the US Open. They claimed all her decisions since that triumph were questionable. They wrote:
"Her every decision after the US Open was questionable. Why would you fire your coach after a fine Wimbledon performance and winning US Open? She has never reached that level again."
Meanwhile, one fan claimed Emma Raducanu may not want to play tennis full-time but hoped she was honest and said so. They wrote:
"Maybe Emma doesn't want to be a full time player and instead, she is happy with playing a reduced schedule and some grass tournaments so she can stay relevant enough to earn her money off-court... I just wish she would be honest and say so..."
Here are some more reactions to Clijsters' comments.
"I don't even know why anyone cares, she's never going to win another slam or big tournament again! It's sad, but it's the truth," one fan said.
"She's gone through some many coaching and team changes in her career, she probably doesn't know who to listen to. If she had a recently retired, former player in her corner, maybe that could sway her to have better influences. 😉" another fan wrote.
Kim Clijsters says Emma Raducanu's mental state could also be a reason for her predicament
When Andy Roddick and Kim Clijsters began discussing Emma Raducanu's scheduling issues, Clijsters claimed there could be two reasons for it. Firstly, she stated that the Brit may not have the 'right people around' and her decision-making is becoming faulty because of it.
Her second possibility was that Raducanu was not able to handle the pressure.
"Is there other things going on mentally where she’s [Emma Raducanu's] kind of just had it with media, pressure… whatever it is. It’s only those two things that could be the cause," she added.
Notably, Emma Raducanu has worked with six different coaches since April 2021. Currently, she is working with Nick Cavaday and the Brit will play next in the Korea Open.
