Eugenie Bouchard has endorsed Frances Tiafoe's call for greater fan engagement in tennis matches, advocating for a more lively and interactive atmosphere akin to that of basketball games.
Tennis is a sport that boasts strict regulations for spectators. Fans are prohibited from moving around or cheering while a point is in progress. Although a portion of the audience supports this traditional approach, there are those who argue that the rules are antiquated and that cheering should be permitted.
Frances Tiafoe is of the opinion that tennis fans should be allowed to cheer like in basketball, which will further enhance the overall experience of the sport. He believes that the energy and excitement of a cheering crowd can create a more engaging atmosphere for both players and spectators alike.
Bouchard wholeheartedly agreed with the statement and took to social media to share Tiafoe's opinion.
Eugenie Bouchard has struggled since return from shoulder surgery
Since her return to tennis following shoulder surgery in 2021, Eugenie Bouchard has struggled to find her form.
Bouchard made her comeback at the Odlum Brown VanOpen in Vancouver last year but lost to Arianne Hartono in her first match. Undeterred, the Canadian participated in the qualifiers for the 2022 US Open, where she won her opening match before going down to Linda Noskova 6-2, 6-3.
The 29-year-old was then granted a wildcard to compete at the Chennai Open, a WTA 250 tournament. She started off strong by beating Joanne Zuger and Karman Kaur Thandi. However, she was ousted by Nadia Podoroska in the quarterfinals.
She failed to make it past the second round in all of her remaining tournaments in 2022.
Bouchard hasn't fared much better this season either. At the ASB Classic in Auckland, the Canadian withdrew from her second qualifying match due to food poisoning.
Her most recent appearance was at the 2023 Australian Open, where she was eliminated in the first round of qualifiers by Ashlyn Krueger.
