Bianca Andreescu’s coach Christophe Lambert is going to great lengths to keep the Canadian stress-free at the 2023 Miami Open.
Lambert returned to Andreescu’s coaching team in November 2022. Ahead of her Miami Open duel with Maria Sakkari, he was seen entertaining the former US Open champion with his dance moves to Jamaican rapper Shaggy’s famous number Mr. Boombastic.
Commenting on the video posted by the WTA on social media, Andreescu tweeted that the coach finds new ways to calm her nerves every day.
"Everyday it’s something new with him," Bianca Andreescu wrote.
Christophe Lambert’s stress busters certainly seem to be working for the 22-year-old. She scored an important 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 second-round win over seventh seed Maria Sakkari that lasted just over three hours.
"I felt like I was on my heels a lot of the time during the match, but I made every ball," the 2019 US Open champion said after the match. "I fought to the end, and I think I played the important points just a little bit better today. But, yeah, it could have gone either way today."
This was Bianca Andreescu’s second win over the Greek athlete in their three-match rivalry. Her first victory over Sakkari was a similar three-setter [7-6 (7), 3-6, 7-6 (4)] in the semifinals of the Miami Open in 2021.
"I'm trying to be as fearless as I can be" – Bianca Andreescu on her 2023 Miami Open campaign so far
Bianca Andreescu’s Miami Open campaign is proving to be a significant confidence booster for the player, who is trying to regain her footing on the WTA tour.
The 2021 runner-up earned a victory over former US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the first round of the event. She followed it up by prevailing over Maria Sakkari in the second round.
Speaking about what makes her a force to be reckoned with at such big tournaments, the two-time WTA 1000 winner stated that she thrives on the significance of the big events.
"I like big stages. I guess that's what it is, honestly. Just being on the big stage. I like it. I thrive on it. Well, I try to," she said after her match against Sakkari.
The Canadian further remarked that her strategy at the Miami Open is to be fearless, and her win over Sakkari is just another step in the right direction.
"I think it's just another step in gaining most of my confidence back. I'm feeling really good on the court. I'm trying to be as fearless as I can be," she said. "It's not always easy, but I feel like I'm getting there."
For a spot in the last 16 in Miami, Andreescu will clash against yet another former Grand Slam champion in Sofia Kenin. The American is on a similar comeback trail and has put on a confident display in front of the home crowd thus far.
