Former Australian Open champion Petr Korda and his daugher Nelly Korda are set to captivate audiences at the 2024 PNC Championship. As the Kordas prepare to tee off, Nelly hilariously teased her father about his nerves.
The PNC Championship, taking place on December 21 and 22 at the Ritz Carlton Golf Course in Orlando, is a unique event where 20 Major Champions team up with their family members to compete in a 36-hole tournament.
The event boasts a total prize purse of $1.085 million, with the top spot claiming $200,000. Returning champions Bernhard Langer and his son Jason add to the anticipation of this year's competition.
This marks the fourth time Petr and Nelly Korda have participated in the PNC Championship. Petr Korda, who won the 1998 Australian Open in singles and the 1996 Australian Open in doubles during his tennis career, has shown no signs of slowing down, even after stepping away from the sport. His nerves, however, seem to be a persistent companion whenever he competes.
This year, as he prepares to tee off alongside Nelly, the nerves are in full effect---something that Nelly finds amusing.
"I hope he appreciates his good shots... It’s funny to see him handle the nerves, especially on the first tee, where he has all the people on the left," Nelly quipped in a recent media opportunity.
Despite the nerves, Nelly Korda also acknowledged the competitive edge that comes out in her father as he settles into the game.
"Once he hits a few shots, and the nerves kind of settle a little, he kind of gets into a groove, but...you know, he hasn't played since, you know, competitively, tennis, since he was 30, 31, so, it's nice to see his competitive juices going and the adrenaline...it's nice to see that different side for him too," she added.
Nelly Korda shared an adorable hug with brother Sebastian after The ANNIKA golf tournament victory
Sebastian Korda made a surprise appearance last month to cheer on his sister, Nelly Korda, as she claimed her seventh title of the season at The ANNIKA golf tournament.
Sebastian Korda has been out of action since his second-round loss at the 2024 US Open due to elbow issues and underwent surgery in October to address the problem.
Nelly, the LPGA World No. 1, started the day tied for second but dazzled the crowd with five consecutive birdies, finishing three strokes ahead of the competition. Sebastian arrived at the Pelican Golf Club just in time to witness his sister's historic victory, and after her win, Nelly joyfully hugged him, delighted by his unexpected presence.
