Amanda Anisimova's defiant response to a troll has earned her resounding support from tennis fans. The incident comes ahead of the American's clash against compatriot Jessica Pegula in the final of the 2024 National Bank Open in Toronto.
Amanda Anisimova has been in impressive form so far at the prestigious WTA 1000 event, reaching the final after getting past the likes of Daria Kasatkina, Anna Kalinskaya (walkover), Aryna Sabalenka, and Emma Navarro, who were all seeded at the tournament.
Following her win over Navarro, the 22-year-old attended a press conference, where she laid bare her twin goals of becoming the World No. 1 in women's singles tennis and a Grand Slam champion.
"I still hopefully have many more years left in my career, and there are many goals that I have for myself that I want to accomplish throughout my career. Like a small one for this year was to break into the top 100, and I've already done that, so I'm really happy about that. It's just small steps in the right direction to hopefully achieve the things that I want to be able to achieve, like winning a Grand Slam, and becoming No. 1 one day," Anisimova said.
An X (formerly Twitter) user took notice of the former World No. 21's admission and proceeded to blatantly ridicule Anisimova over her weight and eating habits. The user suggested that unless the American stops "eating like a cow", she won't be able to achieve her goals.
"First things first: Stop eating like a cow," the user wrote, later adding in a separate post: "Why? She wants to be world Nr. 1 player and win a GS. Being overweight as a professional athlete doesn’t really help her reach her goals."
Several tennis fans, incensed at the remarks, turned critical towards the user.
"Do you think Amanda doesn't know your stupid advice? Look at the last two weeks and see how successful she can be. She is getting better every day. So what are you doing with your life? Other than criticizing a 22-year-old athlete's body on Twitter?" asked an irate fan.
"You’re a disgusting trash bag of a human," commented another fan.
"Oh look who is in the final today, while you're still a bald c**k," another fan chimed in.
Amanda Anisimova herself later responded to the user's post, calmly laughing off the suggestions about her weight and eating habits.
"Don’t you have anything better to do than comment on a 22 year olds body? Like do you have a job or friends ? Damn dude, trust me, I’m okay and I don’t think anyone here is asking for your advice lolz," Anisimova replied to the user.
Some fans later saw Amanda Anisimova's response and vociferously backed her for it.
"Exactly Amanda!!! Don’t take s**t from anyone," a fan wrote.
"Proud of her for defending herself. She is absolutely right. I think she knows more about herself and being an athlete than he does," commented another fan.
"Exactly queen, end that bald f*k," another fan added.
"Like which one of you just beat world no. 2... we love you girl you got this," yet another fan weighed in, referring to Anisimova's 6-4, 6-2 win over former World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in the National Bank Open quarterfinals.
"Huge accomplishment" - Amanda Anisimova on reaching the final of the National Bank Open in Toronto
During the same press conference where she talked about her goals of winning at least one Major and becoming World No. 1, Amanda Anisimova also reflected on reaching the National Bank Open final. According to the former World No. 21, it marks a "huge accomplishment". The 22-year-old also admitted that she is "hungry for more".
"Yeah, I'm super happy. This is a huge accomplishment for me, and something I've been working really hard towards. I'm just super happy, honestly, with my week here, and, yeah, I'm pretty surprised with how well I've been able to do so far. I'm still hungry for more, and I hope that I can really do well tomorrow," the American said.
Amanda Anisimova, currently ranked World No. 132, has become the second-lowest ranked player to reach the final of a WTA 1000 event.
Against Pegula though, Anisimova has lost on both occasions that the pair has clashed on the WTA Tour. Their last meeting came in the Round of 32 at the 2024 Charleston Open, which saw Pegula clinch a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) comeback victory.
