Garbine Muguruza bids adieu to fans after 12 years
Garbine Muguruza called international media at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid to announce her retirement on Saturday, April 20.
Muguruza turned pro in 2012 and had a pretty successful career. She won her first Grand Slam at the 2016 French Open with a victory over Serena Williams in the final.
Muguruza's second Grand Slam came at the 2017 Wimbledon Championships when she beat Venus Williams in the final. She thus became only the second Spanish woman to win the grass-court Major, the first being her then-coach Conchita Martinez.
That year, Muguruza also became the World No. 1 and was named the ITF World Champion.
Garbine Muguruza was last seen on-court at the 2023 Lyon Open where she lost to Linda Noskova in the opening round.
After announcing her retirement, the 30-year-old reflected on her career.
“If 25 years ago when I started hitting my first tennis balls someone had told me that I would become a professional tennis player, that I would fulfil my dream of winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon, that I would become number 1 in the world and win the WTA Finals... I would have thought this person was crazy," she said as per laureus.com
"Tennis has given me a lot in this first part of my life. It has been a fantastic journey in which I have experienced unique situations. I have travelled all over the world and experienced many different cultures," she added.
As Laureus' ambassador, Muguruza will also be part of the voting process for the Laureus Sports for Good awards.
