Reports suggest Novak Djokovic is set to represent Serbia in the Davis Cup tie against Greece. This comes after his early exit from the US Open and left fans concerned about his grueling schedule.
Despite suffering from a knee injury this season, Djokovic reached the Wimbledon final and won the elusive Olympic gold medal. However, the 37-year-old's return to tennis in New York after his triumph in Paris did not last long.
He won against Radu Albot in the first round at the US Open and received a walkover against Laslo Djere in the second round. In the third round, Alexei Popyrin handed the 24-time Grand Slam winner a shock defeat in four sets.
The World No. 2 admitted he was playing his 'worst tennis' at the New York Major and reaching the third round was a success. However, soon after his US Open exit, a report confirmed that the Serb would be representing his country at the Davis Cup.
The 37-year-old will join Miomir Kecmanovic, Dušan Lajović, and Hamad Međedović in playing for Serbia against Greece at the Aleksandar Nikolic Hall in Belgrade on September 14 and 15. One fan posted the news on X:
Many fans were against Djokovic's decision to play the Davis Cup.
"Oh f**k off with the Davis Cup already!!!" they wrote.
"Oh Shittt!!! There goes the 2025 season. It's over," another fan wrote.
"Annual Djokovic meltdown.. here we go," a third fan wrote.
"Why does novak have to go," yet another fan lamented.
Meanwhile, some fans cheered on the Serb and highlighted that he loves to represent his country.
"I know for Novak playing for Serbia🇷🇸 is very important, he said it countless times, I don't know why some fans are still questioning him playing for his country. Plus, I got tickets and I really really hope to see Nole there," one fan wrote.
"Of course he is playing for [Serbia]," another fan wrote.
Novak Djokovic refrains from blaming scheduling for poor showing at US Open 2024
Novak Djokovic did not mince his words while describing his performance at the 2024 US Open. During the post-match press conference after his third-round loss against Alexei Popyrin, Djokovic called his third-round exit a 'success' and claimed he 'played some of the worst tennis' he has ever played.
He said he 'felt out of gas' but he did not have any 'physical issues'. Further, he did not pinpoint the scheduling as a reason for his poor showing.
“You could argue that it's because of the Olympics, but I don't know. I don't want to analyse that right now. I was just looking to really improve my game here on a daily basis, but it just didn't happen,” he said.
Djokovic will now prepare to face Greece in the Davis Cup before he travels to China to play in the Shanghai Masters early in October.
