Fans expressed outrage and ridicule after Boris Becker offered financial and career advice to Carlos Alcaraz and his team. Many fans said it was ironic and hypocritical for Becker to comment that the Spaniard and his management should prioritize titles over money.
In the debut episode of the newly-launched Becker Petkovic Podcast, where Boris Becker teams up with former WTA star Andrea Petkovic, the German tennis legend shared a candid critique of Carlos Alcaraz’s 2024 season. Becker suggested that the 21-year-old's tournament schedule was poorly managed.
The six-time Grand Slam champion emphasized that Alcaraz should only compete when he is fully prepared to deliver his best. He also called for a shift in priorities from the Spaniard's team, suggesting they focus on major titles and rankings rather than financial opportunities.
"His team needs to focus less on the money and more on titles and the world rankings. Sure, he gets seven-figure appearance fees for show fights in the off-season, but coaches and managers simply have to protect him better," Becker said (via Tennis365).
His comments were posted on X (formerly Twitter) and some fans mocked his credibility, referencing his infamous bankruptcy and personal controversies.
"Boris "convicted felon for tax evasion" Becker giving financial advice to someone who actually pays their taxes 🤭 you gotta be kidding me," one fan wrote.
"The convicted felon talking about money 🤦♀️" another fan wrote.
"Shut your mouth convict! That guy won 2 of the 4 grand slams last year, the silver medal and MULTIPLE other tournaments. He doesn’t need to win every grand slam to be worthy. He’s going great. Just leave him alone. I’m so sick of the Alcaraz criticism," a third fan wrote.
Here are some more fan reactions to Boris Becker's advice for Carlos Alcaraz and his team.
"Sorry, this is tax-evading, bankrupt ex jailbird and serial sha**er Becker commenting on how JCF and co are managing Alcaraz?? Seriously?" one fan asked.
"nah idt carlos should be taking ANY advice from someone who knocked up a lady in a nobu broom closet and denied it 🫤" another fan wrote.
"why is this convict still giving out his opinions," yet another fan wrote.
Becker has faced significant controversies over the years. In 2002, he was convicted of tax evasion in Germany for evading approximately €1.7 million in taxes by falsely claiming residency in Monaco. In 2022, Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for hiding £2.5 million worth of assets and loans to avoid paying debts after declaring bankruptcy in 2017.
Boris Becker attributes Carlos Alcaraz's fitness issues to motivation
Carlos Alcaraz suffered fitness issues in the fag end of the 2024 season. He regularly complained about the "tight" schedule and faced difficulty replicating his mid-season form at the end of it.
Speaking to Punto de Break, tennis legend Boris Becker attributed the Spaniard's fitness issues to 'motivation'.
"My feeling has always been that when motivation goes down, the body suffers. If you skip some training sessions, the chances of getting injured or suffering physical discomfort are much greater," Becker said.
"That's what happened to me when I was 20 and I think which is the case of Alcaraz as well. It seems logical to me for a young man who is so successful, it has happened to everyone," he added.
Alcaraz played multiple exhibition events during the offseason and skipped preparatory tournaments ahead of the 2025 Australian Open. He has arrived in Melbourne and participated in practice sessions with the first Slam of the new season scheduled to begin on Sunday, January 12.
