Alexander Zverev's girlfriend, Sophia Thomalla, has teased the World No. 4 following his first win of the grass-court season. The actress referred to him as a father, tennis expert, and comedian.
The couple have been together since 2020, and she has always accompanied Zverev to a couple of social events and some of his matches on the ATP tour. In Zverev's first-round match at the 2024 Halle Open, he defeated Oscar Otte 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.
On Tuesday, Thomalla posted a video on her Instagram story that featured Zverev speaking to the press during an on-court interview. Teasing the 27-year-old, Thomalla wrote in the caption:
“Brother, manager, father, brother-in-law, tennis player, commentator, tennis expert, and recently also comedian,” she wrote in German.
During the on-court interview, Zverev expressed his happiness about qualifying for the second round and mentioned that it was difficult facing Otte.
"A week ago, I was playing on clay still basically. He made it very tough for me, no rhythm at all," Zverev said in his on-court interview. "That's how grass-court tennis is sometimes and I'm just happy with the win. He did make it extremely difficult for me, so credit to him. I'm obviously happy that I won and hopefully it's going to be a level above in the next match,” he said.
Zverev has had a spectacular season, winning his sixth ATP Masters title at the 2024 Italian Open against Nicolás Jarry. The German also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open, Los Cabos Open, and Miami Open, as well as the final of the French Open, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 1-6, 2-6.
Alexander Zverev will face Lorenzo Sonego in the second round of the Halle Open
Alexander Zverev will face Italy's Lorenzo Sonego in the second round of the Halle Open on Wednesday. The World No. 4 kicked off his grass-court season on Tuesday with a win over countryman Oscar Otte in the first round.
Lorenzo Sonego, who defeated Miomir Kecmanović in his first-round match on Tuesday, will be facing Zverev for the fourth time in his career.
Their first match was in the second round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, where Zverev emerged victorious. Zverev won again the next time they faced off, which was in the quarterfinal of the 2023 Dubai Open. The German then claimed his third consecutive victory against Sonego when he defeated him in the round-robin stage of the 2024 United Cup, where Germany defeated Italy.
Alexander Zverev's 2023 grass-court season also began at the Halle Open, where he defeated Dominic Thiem, Denis Shapovalov, and Nicolás Jarry before being eliminated in the semifinal by the eventual winner, Alexander Bublik.
Zverev went on to compete in the Wimbledon Championships, where he defeated Gijs Brouwer and Yosuke Watanuki before losing to Matteo Berrettini in the third round.
