Holger Rune’s season opener at the 2025 Brisbane International ended in disappointment as he fell 5-7, 3-6 to Jiri Lehecka, leaving fans frustrated with what they see as a troubling continuation of his struggles from 2024.
Rune began his 2025 season at the Brisbane International, where he had finished as the runner-up just a year ago. However, hopes for a strong start were swiftly dashed as Lehecka delivered a commanding performance to defeat the Dane. The 23-year-old Czech capitalized on his opportunities, converting five of six break points to secure a convincing victory and advance to the next round.
The result of the match was posted on Reddit and fans expressed dismay at the lack of improvement.
"Just feels like Rune doesn't give a f**k. I got the feeling his struggles will continue in the 2025 season," one fan wrote.
"Lol I won't call it an upset," another fan wrote.
"It would be upset if Holger won," a third fan wrote.
One fan criticized Holger Rune by remarking on his earlier aspirations. They wrote:
"Can’t believe he openly expressed desire to be called one of next Big3 at one point…"
Another lamented the lack of change, saying:
"New season, same old Rune!"
A more humorous take came from a fan of lower-tier tournaments, welcoming Rune back to the Challenger circuit. They wrote:
"As a huge fan of challengers, we'll welcome him when the time comes"
Lehecka will face qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka, who defeated Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 6-4 in the next round at the Brisbane International.
"It's still a very immature game" - Holger Rune's gameplay was slammed by former World No. 1 Jim Courier after Paris Masters exit

At the 2024 Paris Masters in November, Holger Rune faced a 3-6, 6-7 defeat to eventual winner Alexander Zverev in the semifinal. The Dane's performance, however, invited criticism from former World No. 1 Jim Courier. The American slammed Rune's gameplay describing it as "immature."
"I, for one, have no idea what he's trying to do out here. It's just all happening instinctively - it's like a full-blown jazz exploration out here. No rhyme, no rhythm. There's a lot of great things happening, it's just all scattershot and that is not a recipe for long-term success," Courier said during Rune's semifinal in Paris.
"It's still a very immature game. If he wants to be with the big boys consistently, he's gonna have to find something he can rely on rather than throwing paint against the wall and seeing what it looks like when it's all said and done. He just needs a sense of order - doesn't have it," he added.
Rune held a 45-23 record this season, reaching only the final in Brisbane. The World No. 13 has faced a setback after losing the opening match of his 2025 campaign. According to his official website, he is next slated to feature at the Australian Open.
