Taylor Townsend expressed her delight in the recent 'resurgence' of women's tennis post the Williams sisters era in the USA after she lost to Emma Navarro at the National Bank Open. The two Americans faced in the quarterfinals of the WTA with the 23-year-old prevailing in straight sets.
Townsend has had an incredible start to her North American hard-court swing at the 2024 National Bank Open where she entered the main draw as a lucky loser after losing to Erika Andreeva in the qualifiers.
The American kicked off her campaign against 16th seed Dayana Yastremska, but their match came to an unfortunate end when the Ukrainian had to withdraw during the second set. She comfortably ousted local wildcard Marina Stakusic next and stunned fourth seed Jelena Ostapenko to reach the quarterfinals.
Here, the 28-year-old faced compatriot Emma Navarro, who has been steadily rising the ranks and lost 3-6, 6-7(5).
During her press conference, Taylor Townsend was told how there were five American women in the quarterfinals of the Canadian WTA 1000 and was asked to comment on the current situation of women's tennis in her country. Townsend responded by saying that she was delighted to see the "resurgence" of women's tennis in the United States.
She said that earlier it used to be only Serena and Venus Williams who were dominating the game while the rest tried to chase them and hence was glad to see many Americans inside the Top 100.
"I think it's a really special time just to be able to have another resurgence of women's tennis. For so many years it was Venus and Serena only, and people tried to kind of chase the top. It's really nice to be able to have so many high-level women inside the top 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, it's very deep. It's great because, like you said, we all push each other, it's really cool," Taylor Townsend said.
