Chris Evert congratulated Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek on their respective victories at the 2024 French Open. The former World No. 1 also predicted that they would both go on to win Grand Slam titles in double-digits.
On Saturday, Swiatek won her third consecutive French Open title, fourth overall, by defeating Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-1 in the women's singles final. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in the men's singles final on Sunday to clinch his first French Open title.
Following their victories at the clay-court major, the 18-time Grand Slam champion took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, June 10, to congratulate Alcaraz and Swiatek, adding that they will dominate the sport for a long time, winning plenty more Grand Slam titles.
“Congrats to @iga_swiatek and @carlosalcaraz They’ve brought a new and higher level to the game. Forecasting double digits in Slams. They will be around for a long time!” Chris Evert said
Alcaraz’s victory in the final on Sunday was his third Grand Slam title, having previously won the US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2023. It also made him the youngest man to win Grand Slams on all surfaces.
On the other hand, Iga Swiatek has now secured five Grand Slam titles, winning the French Open in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024 as well as the 2022 US Open. She is now the only active woman on the WTA Tour, besides Venus Williams, to have won five or more Grand Slam titles.
Iga Swiatek's French Open dominance makes Chris Evert "worried" about her record
Chris Evert recently joked that she is worried about Iga Swiatek breaking her French Open record. Before the start of the final, Evert, who holds the record for the most French Open titles (7) in women's singles, told Eurosport that every day, she thinks about the possibility of Swiatek breaking her record.
However, she believes that the World No.1 will end up with double-digit titles at the French Open while also surpassing her record. With four Roland Garros titles to her name already, the 23-year-old Polish player is only three titles away from breaking Evert's record.
"Yeah, I think about it (Swiatek surpassing her French Open title haul) everyday when I day put my head on the pillow, I'm worried about Iga. No, I think Iga will end up with double digits, not only beating my seven," Evert said. "I'm confident right now that she's going to get four. That's only three away from mine, and she's only 23," Evert added
Beyond her French Open dominance, Evert also secured six US Open titles, two Australian Open victories, and three Wimbledon championships during her playing career.
