Frances Tiafoe wasted no time in giving a shoutout to the Washington Commanders and players Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin following his thrilling five-set victory over Arthur Rinderknech at the 2025 Australian Open. A devoted Commanders fan, Tiafoe was delighted to learn of their triumph from fans after his match.
17th seed Tiafoe went two sets up against Rinderknech in the first round on Monday, January 13, and looked on his way to a comfortable win. However, the Frenchman had a different idea as he dug deep and leveled the score to force a deciding set.
The American was then spotted feeling uneasy, throwing up on the court, but he fought through it and bagged the fifth set to win 7-6 (2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-3.
Soon after, in his post-match interview with Rennae Stubbs, Tiafoe revealed that some fans told him about the Commanders' 23-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also gave a shoutout to quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Terry McLaurin.
"Commanders baby! Some fans told me. They just told me when I finished. I started laughing man. Shoutout to Jayden Daniels, shoutout to my man Terry McLaurin. Unbelievable, man..." Frances Tiafoe said.
"JD5 and Terry, I love you'll boys. Mark, you're probably acting like the owner right now, like Josh Harris himself. But, congratulations everybody. That's so big for DMV. Today, my win is big for DMV as well," he added.
This is the $6.3 billion-worth Commanders' first post-season win in 19 years and they will take on the top-seeded Detroit Lions next in the divisional round.
Frances Tiafoe requests the Washington Commanders to oust the Philadephia Eagles after his Australian Open win
During his interview with Rennae Stubbs, Frances Tiafoe mentioned the Philadelphia Eagles' win and requested his beloved Washington Commanders take the Eagles out.
"Philly was winning by a lot before I came on. So, I’m sure they won. Let’s not have these Eagles fly, man. Let’s get them out here too," he said.
The Eagles comfortably got the better of the Green Bay Packers 22-10.
Further, Tiafoe also mentioned that he went through a tumultuous time on the court regarding his health and would have pulled out if it was not a Grand Slam event.
"Any other tournament, I would have pulled out but it’s a Slam... And these are the tournaments I care about the most. Whatever it takes," Tiafoe said.
In the second round of the Australian Open, Tiafoe will take on Fabian Marozsan who defeated Thiago Seyboth-Wild 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
