Frances Tiafoe’s 2025 Australian Open campaign ended earlier than expected with a second-round loss to Fabian Marozsan. The defeat didn’t sit well with fans, who were quick to express their disappointment.

Tiafoe arrived in Melbourne riding high on confidence from his semifinal run at last year’s US Open. He started strong with a hard-fought 7-6(2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-3 victory over Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round.

In the second round, Tiafoe faced Marozsan in another grueling five-setter. The match saw the American lose his temper at one point, throwing bottles in frustration, before succumbing to a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6 defeat. This marked the second consecutive year he failed to progress beyond the second round at the Hardcourt Major.

Fans were harsh on Frances Tiafoe, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration. One fan even accused the 26-year-old of "gambling" and intentionally throwing the match.

“Tiafoe gotta be gambling and throwing games intentionally,” the fan wrote.

Another wrote:

“Tiafoe with another disappointing outing. I wish this dude would stop that lollygaggiing behavior and have a killer mentality from the jump. You won’t win a Major just coasting. #AusOpen.”
“Marozsan is actually so good player. But Tiafoe's downfall is scary. Last season he only showed good results on the home soil in the USA. What's wrong with him outside America,” another added.

One account posted:

“I’m praying Tiafoe hangs up his racket. Biggest fraud tennis has ever seen.”
“B2B Majors Frances Tiafoe had his chances to win in 4 sets (had 10 break points in the 4th) and didn’t convert any of them & got breadsticked in the 5th. Marozsan was stellar on some of them, but others Frances knows he should’ve done better. Was completely outplayed in the 5th,” another added.

One account tweeted:

“He doesn't seem motivated unless in America and that's sad.”

Frances Tiafoe is still chasing his first Grand Slam title but has come close on several occasions. His standout performances include reaching the semifinals of the US Open in both 2022 and 2024, where he fell to Carlos Alcaraz and compatriot Taylor Fritz, respectively.

Tiafoe's next best performance came at the Australian Open in 2019, where he reached the quarterfinals before falling to Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard advanced to the final but was defeated by Novak Djokovic.

The American also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2022 and the third at the French Open in 2023.
