Sabrina Ionescu's custom Nike jacket stole the show during New York Liberty's WNBA championship parade. It even caught the eye of Frances Tiafoe who called it the "toughest jacket".
On Sunday, 20 October, the New York Liberty defeated the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals to earn their maiden WNBA championship. On Thursday, 24 October, the team was rewarded with a ticker tape parade, which drew huge a crowd of supporters.
Ionescu and her custom Nike jacket were a star attraction at the parade. There were many notable additions in the jacket including the scores of their playoffs and finals series and Ionescu's logo. The 2024 WNBA champion shared the post with a quote that read:
“Liberty has a nice ring to it.”
American tennis star Tiafoe was impressed with the jacket. He took to his Instagram to reshare the image of the jacket and wrote:
"This prolly the toughest jacket I've ever seen"
Ionescu, drafted first overall by the New York Liberty in 2020, has been a game-changer for the franchise. Known for her exceptional scoring abilities, the Oregon standout quickly became a leader on the court.
In 2024, Ionescu played a pivotal role in leading the Liberty to the first WNBA championship in their 28 years of existence. At the parade, Ionescu said, via USA Today:
"Seeing how many people were smiling and celebrating puts in perspective what it means to win a championship."
"I think I'm a New Yorker now," Ionescu added with pride.
Sabrina Ionescu cheered for Frances Tiafoe during his US Open 2024 QF victory over Grigor Dimitrov
Sabrina Ionescu and her husband Hroniss Grasu were spotted at Arthur Ashe Stadium in September cheering for Frances Tiafoe during his US Open quarterfinal against Grigor Dimitrov.
The US Open's official social media account uploaded a short clip of Ionescu animatedly cheering for the American tennis player.
The WNBA star later reposted the video on her Instagram and wrote:
"Cheering you on homie @bigfoe1998"
20th seed Tiafoe had got the better of ninth seed Dimitrov after the Bulgarian retired mid-fourth set after going 2-1 down. Tiafoe was beaten by the 12th seed compatriot Taylor Fritz 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, 1-6, in a thrilling semifinal battle.
Tiafoe was also spotted wearing Ionescu's jersey during a press conference at the Citi Open earlier. It was reported that the pair share the same agent.
