Frances Tiafoe's announcement that he's left Nike to become an ambassador for Canadian brand Lululemon has energized the tennis world. While some have questioned the American's move, his girlfriend and ex-tennis professional Ayan Broomfield has no doubts that Tiafoe has made the right decision.
Tiafoe will be wearing Lululemon's "passionate pink" apparel at the Australian Open next week, telling Forbes:
"I’m really excited to wear Lululemon on the court. I got to give a lot of input into my look which feels very me and shows off my style. Working with a brand that’s newer in the tennis world is really cool because they care about both performance and style.”
It's a style that Broomfield, who reached a career-high ATP world ranking of 680 in 2015 and is now highly active on social media, clearly approves of as she posted her simple three-word response to the news:
"Proud of you."
26-year-old American Tiafoe has yet to realize the potential he showed when at 22 he became the youngest American man to win a tournament on the ATP Tour since Andy Roddick in 2002.
Frances Tiafoe is hoping his new look will lead to greater success at the 2025 Australian Open
The ATP's World No. 17 Frances Tiafoe reached his first Major semifinal at the US Open in 2022 and repeated the feat in 2024, where he lost in an all-American five-set encounter with Taylor Fritz. 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
That performance remains Tiafoe's best major achievement. He's a three-time ATP title winner and approaches the 2025 Australian Open after a difficult end to 2024, with a loss of momentum followed by controversy at the Shanghai Masters in October.
At the Shanghai event, Tiafoe launched a verbal tirade at umpire Jimmy Pinoargote after receiving continuous time-penalty warnings during his losing second-round match to Roman Safiulin. The outburst cost him $120,000 in ATP fines for verbal abuse and aggravated behavior.
Tiafoe's best showing at the Australian Open was back in 2019, when he progressed to the quarterfinal stage, eventually succumbing to Rafael Nadal. There followed a first-round loss to Daniil Medvedev in 2020, and second-round exits in 2021, 2022, and 2024. His new sponsor Lululemon will be looking for Tiafoe to give a better account of himself at the Melbourne tournament in 2025, having made a significant investment in his future.
