Frances Tiafoe's girlfriend Ayan Broomfield 'heartbroken' by New Orleans terror attack; urges US to adopt Australia's gun safety laws

Frances Tiafoe's girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, was deeply affected by the recent terror attack in New Orleans. The Canadian tennis player also urged the United States to implement gun safety laws similar to those in Australia.

On New Year’s Day, a man drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans' French Quarter, resulting in at least 14 deaths and several injuries. The attacker was later killed in a shootout with the police. Federal authorities have confirmed that the attack was carried out by an ISIS terrorist by identifying a flag on the rear bumper of the vehicle.

On Tuesday, January 7, Broomfield shared an Instagram story to express her condolences for the "heartbreaking incident." She recalled the 2012 Aurora theater mass shooting in the US, where 12 people lost their lives, and mentioned that she has rarely visited theaters ever since.

Broomfield wrote:

“These senseless attacks are incredibly heartbreaking and scary. also creates so much anxiety around public gatherings. I don't know if you guys remember the movie theatre mass shooting but I’ve barely been to the theatre since.”

While reflecting on her time in Australia, Broomfield compared the country’s gun laws to those in the United States, questioning why America couldn’t adopt similar regulations.

“Also, while being in Australia and learning about their gun laws, I don't understand why America couldn't adhere to similar protocols,” Broomfield wrote in her story.

“It's just nice to know that there is a strict and focused process to gun control here and I wish that something similar was implemented earlier on back home,” she added.

Frances Tiafoe's girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, recently joined him in Australia after overcoming a mysterious health scare. The couple, who bonded over their shared love for tennis, has been together since 2015 before making their relationship public three years later.

On December 23, Broomfield shared an update on Instagram about her health crisis, describing the experience as a “circus.” She expressed gratitude for the love and support she received, writing in her Stories:

"So this past week was a bit of a circus but I'm so freaking grateful for family, friends, and this community you guys are so amazing."

On December 28, Broomfield announced that her doctor had cleared her to travel following a successful surgery for her “mysterious” health scare:

"Doctor cleared me to travel😊😊Let the packing begin.”

Later that day, the couple arrived at Brisbane Airport as Frances Tiafoe kicked off his 2025 season at the Brisbane International. Although he secured a victory in his opening match against Adam Walton, he was defeated by Frenchman Giovanni Perricard in straight sets.

The American is now set to compete in the 2025 Australian Open, scheduled to take place from January 12 to January 26.
