Frances Tiafoe's girlfriend Ayan Broomfield pointed out the lack of 'Black people' at the Australian Open
Frances Tiafoe, seeded 17th, kicked off his 2025 Australian Open campaign with a five-set win over Arthur Rinderknech. The pair battled for over four hours and the American even threw up during the match to finally secure a 7-6(2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-3 victory.
While supporting him, Tiafoe’s girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, took to TikTok to highlight a lack of Black spectators and women at the Melbourne Slam.
"I was there to watch my boyfriend play and I really didn't see any other women or people of color. In specific, Black people, but people of color nonetheless," Broomfield shared.
Responses to her TikTok revealed several reasons for the absence including difficulty securing tickets, intense heat, and a sense of not belonging.
Broomfield encouraged Black fans to keep attending tournaments despite feeling out of place.
"I do understand what you're saying. What I will say though is, if we don't keep taking up space and showing up, it's never going to get better," she said.
"So, my advice is that we continue to come and we continue to be present and we continue to put ourselves in these rooms, so at some point we do start to feel comfortable. That's probably why I made this TikTok in the first place because representation matters and the more you see yourself in these rooms, in these positions, the more comfortable you will feel," she added.
Unfortunately for Tiafoe, he was pushed to the limits by Fabian Marozsan in the second round of the Australian Open and lost 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6.
