Sofia Kenin suffered an unexpected loss to Margaux Rouvroy in the first round of qualifying for the 2023 French Open. Many tennis fans were surprised by the result as the 24-year-old American beat World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka at the Italian Open just 11 days ago.

Sofia Kenin won the 2020 Australian Open and played in the final of the 2020 French Open, but is currently placed outside the top 100 of the WTA rankings.

The former World No. 4 has struggled with injuries ever since her breakthrough 2020 season, and hasn't been able to come anywhere close to her best form. But a loss to the World No. 278 Rouvroy was still unexpected, to say the least.

The 22-year-old Margaux Rouvroy defeated Sofia Kenin in just over an hour and a half of play, with the scoreline reading 6-4, 6-3. Kenin made three double faults during the match and won just 38% points on her second serve.

Here are some of the social media reactions from tennis fans who were surprised by Kenin's elimination from the 2023 French Open qualifiers.

Many fans expected Sofia Kenin to perform well because of her win against Sabalenka 11 days ago in Madrid, but that was not to be.

"11 days ago she wins in straight sets against Sabalenka… on clay. I really wonder how this could happen," a fan wrote.

2020 was the best year of Sofia Kenin's career. The American almost won two Grand Slam titles that season and finished as the 4th ranked player in the world.

At the 2020 Australian Open, Sofia Kenin defeated Garbine Muguruza 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to win her first Grand Slam title. On her way to the summit clash, she defeated top seed Ashleigh Barty as well as Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, Zhang Shuai, Ann Li, and Martina Trevisan. Kenin reached her career-high ranking of World No. 4 in March 2020.

At the 2020 French Open, which was held in October due to the coronavirus pandemic, Kenin was defeated in the final by an up-and-coming Iga Swiatek, 4-6, 1-6.
