Former Spanish tennis player Garbine Muguruza recently tied the knot with Arthur Borges in an intimate ceremony. The former French Open champion has been in a relationship with Borges since 2021.
Muguruza, a former tennis player, enjoyed an impressive career, securing 10 tour-level titles, including two Grand Slam victories, the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. The Spaniard, who last competed over a year ago at the Open 6e Sens Métropole de Lyon, announced her retirement in April this year.
Meanwhile, her partner, Borges, is a businessman and professional model who has worked with notable brands like Hugo Boss. He also serves as the Director of Made to Measure North America at Tom Ford.
The pair first met during the 2021 US Open when Borges stopped Muguruza in Central Park, New York to wish her luck at the tournament. They started dating each other since then. Furthermore, they made their first public appearance at the 2021 WTA Tour Finals, where Borges cheered Muguruza on from the stands.
As the Spaniard shared previously, she was in tears when Borges proposed and didn’t know how to react before finally saying yes. The couple announced their engagement in May of last year.
Nearly a year after getting engaged the duo tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at "La Concepción" estate in Marbella, Spain. However, neither has shared any photos from the ceremony online.
A fan shared a photo of Muguruza in an elegant white wedding gown, smiling as she shared a heartfelt moment with her loved ones.
"It was love at first sight" - When Garbine Muguruza on meeting Arthur Borges for the first time
Garbine Muguruza attended the Madrid Open semifinal between Taylor Fritz and Andrey Rublev earlier in May. After the match, the Spaniard appeared in an interview with Tennis Channel, where she spoke at length about her first impression after meeting Arthur Borges.
"It's like a Hollywood movie, it's a crazy story. We met in the street in New York. It was love at first sight," she said.
Muguruza further explained how she unexpectedly met Borges in Central Park. Struck by his looks, she initiated a conversation, and Borges, being a tennis fan, recognized her and wished her luck.
"It was one of those boring days, I didn't know what to do so I decided to go for a walk in Central Park, as always. Yeah, I just bumped [into] him. And, I was like, wait a minute, you're very handsome. Who are you? And, he is a tennis fan so he recognized me and said 'Hey, good luck'... That's it. That was enough. Next day, we were on our first date."
Borges was often seen in the stands cheering for the two-time Major champion during her matches. Prior to marrying the former tennis player, he was married for three years to Kiira Korpies, but they parted ways in 2021.
