Denis Shapovalov's seeming jibe at Iga Swiatek for her one-month doping ban drew criticism from tennis fans online. Swiatek accepted a one-month ban after she tested positive for trimetazidine, a banned substance, in August 2024.

The banned substance was detected in a sample taken from an out-of-competition test. However, after much investigation, the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) declared that the Pole bore 'No Significant Fault or Negligence'.

Shapovalov reacted to the duration of Swiatek's ban and wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

"1 month ban eh."

The Canadian had also expressed his disappointment at Jannik Sinner's doping verdict, stating that players were treated differently. In response to Shapovalov's tweet about Swiatek's ban, a fan wrote:

Here are some other reactions from tennis fans online:

"Maybe you should go back to school not like you’re actually busy playing tennis," a fan quipped.
"My guy you keep on complaining about issues when you don't even know the rules, pls," a fan wrote.
"I advise you to first delve into the topic, read Iga's statement and the reason for the suspension, and only then judge. Unless it's too difficult and too time-consuming for you," a fan advised.

"Brother if you're on twitter and im on twitter then who's playing the tennis," a fan joked.

In the comments of the above post, when a fan said that Denis Shapovalov should hope that he would never suffer the same fate as Iga Swiatek, the Canadian questioned why they felt that. The fan said,

"Because it can happen to anyone to be contaminated and I am sure you would appeal too to avoid being suspended," they wrote.

In response, Shapovalov highlighted Simona Halep's and Mikael Ymer's long bans and claimed that the doping rules were 'unfair'.

"That doesn’t make it fair that players Halep and others had a crazy long bans for similar things. I’m glad it’s changing because the doping rules are unfair. But guys like Ymer are still suspended and he’s never even tested positive," Shapovalov wrote.

Iga Swiatek also broke her silence via a video message on Instagram where she chronicled what went down. She revealed that the test was taken on August 12 ahead of the Cincinnati Open, where she reached the semifinals.

Swiatek found out about her positive doping result on September 12, after the North American hardcourt swing.
