Fans were unimpressed with Serena Williams' appearance on the ESPN broadcast of LAGC vs Tiger Woods-led Jupiter Links on Tuesday, January 14. Williams is one of the co-owners of the LAGC and her comments during the broadcast did not resonate with fans watching.
Williams attended the highly-anticipated debut of LAGC in the TGL with her husband Alexis Ohanian at the SoFi Center in Florida. For a period, she also joined the commentators and was interviewed.
Fans on X expressed their dissatisfaction at the presence of the 23-time Grand Slam champion in the commentary booth. The overall sentiment was frustration, with many feeling that Williams, despite her tennis credentials, lacked insight into the intricacies of golf.
"TGL could be a lot of fun with knowledge golf commentators. They’ve got Serena Williams out here trying to talk golf," one fan wrote.
"So Serena Williams is single handedly ruining TGL," another fan wrote.
"Serena Williams knows next to nothing about golf #TGL #LAGC," a third fan wrote.
"Someone get Serena Williams off the f***ing mic for TGL. she has absolutely no idea what she is saying. #TGL" yet another frustrated fan wrote.
A video of Williams was also posted on X where her husband Alexis Ohanian seemed to have been enjoying a play while she looked "bored."
Reacting to her perceived disinterest, one fan wrote:
"Serena Williams looks like she’d rather be having a Root Canal"
"This Serena Williams interview might of just killed TGL before it even took two steps," another fan wrote.
LAGC, co-owned by Serena, her husband Alexis Ohanian, their daughters Olympia and Adira, and sister Venus Williams, made a strong debut with a dominant 12-1 win over the Jupiter Links. Represented by Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, and Sahith Theegala, LAGC cruised past the Jupiter Links, which featured Tiger Woods, Kevin Kisner, and Max Homa.
Serena Williams' daughters Olympia & Adira possess different levels of interest in golf
During the ESPN broadcast of LAGC vs. Jupiter Links, Serena Williams was asked if she played golf. The 23-time Grand Slam champion replied,
"No, but I did hit last Sunday, and that counts. My daughter plays golf. Well, one was playing, and one was rolling around on her back. I'm not kidding."
Williams' seven-year-old daughter Olympia has shown a growing interest in golf, with both Serena and her husband Alexis Ohanian often sharing her golfing moments on social media. The second daughter, Adira, likely refers to the one rolling around, as she is still just one year old.
