Carlos Alcaraz emerged victorious in his 2024 Wimbledon Championships quarterfinal clash against Tommy Paul. The defending champion finished his match in time to be able to watch Spain's UEFA Euro 2024 semifinal against France, which is 'another big moment' for the Spanish people.
Alcaraz was up against American No. 2 Tommy Paul in the quarterfinal of Wimbledon on Tuesday, July 9. The winner of the Queen's Club Championships was in good form, as he bagged two straight-set wins in the third and fourth rounds on his way to the last-eight stage.
Paul's hot streak continued as he won the first set and led by two games in the second set. However, the American could not continue his dominance. Alcaraz crawled back into the game and bagged three sets in a row from a set and two games down to close out the match 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in three hours and 11 minutes.
Within an hour after the completion of Alcaraz's quarterfinal, Spain's football team was set to kick off their semifinal against France at the UEFA Euro 2024 in Munich, Germany. The 21-year-old Alcaraz, who is a football fan, was nervous about the match.
During his post-match on-court interview, Alcaraz said that his Wimbledon progress and Spain's football team's success are both big moments for his nation.
"I just got enough nerves here in the match, I'm gonna get more nerves watching the Spanish team but yeah, another big semifinal another big moment for the Spanish people. So, let's see how it is going to be but I am going to enjoy it for sure," Alcaraz said.
Spain is the highest-scoring team remaining at UEFA Euro 2024 and is the only team with a 100% record. France, on the other hand, has yet to score a goal from open play. This is the 37th meeting between the two nations and Spain leads their head-to-head record 16-13 with seven draws.
