Vijay Sundar Prashanth and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan have made their way through to the final of the Hangzhou Open 2024. On Monday, September 23, the Indian duo beat USA’s Robert Galloway and Uruguay’s Ariel Behar 0-6, 6-2, 10-4 at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Complex Centre Gymnasium.
After the opening set, it looked like the American-Uruguayan pair would run away with the match in a canter. But Prashanth and Jeevan showed nerves of steel to make an incredible comeback.
Jeevan and Prashanth have a challenging task ahead as they lock horns with the German pair of Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens in the grand finale on Tuesday, September 24.
Frantzen and Jebens are also in impressive form and got a walkover in their semi-finals against Maximilian Marterer and Radu Albot.
Jeevan, Prashanth step up under pressure
Against Galloway and Behar, the Indian pair dropped their serve three times in the first set and looked in all sorts of trouble. But in the second, they turned their fortunes around with two breaks of serve. They became unstoppable once the contest went into the match tie-breaker.
They had a win percentage of 68 from their first serves. Galloway and Behar, on the other hand, won 71 percent of points from their first serves. Although they had one more break point than Jeevan and Prashanth, they lost the plot later to finish on the losing side.
Galloway and Behar struggled with their second serves, making as many as five double faults. Jeevan and Prashant also made four double faults, but managed to hold their composure in the crucial moments.
Earlier, the Indian duo beat Australia’s Blake Bayldon and Thomas Fancutt in the pre-quarters. In the quarterfinals, they took down the British pair of Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash and are now one step away from winning the title.
