Nick Kyrgios is currently in New York for the US Open, not to compete for the title, but on commentary duty. Kyrgios recently reacted to a fan who applauded his commentary of the tournament matches, and the Aussie expressed confidence in his new role.
Due to knee and wrist injuries that required surgery, Nick Kyrgios has only been able to play one match since 2022. As the Aussie recuperated, he transitioned from the court to the commentary booth. He first took on commentary duties at the 2023 ATP Finals in Turin, followed by the 2024 Australian Open, where he worked as a commentator for Eurosport. Since then, Kyrgios has been gaining traction, receiving both criticism and applause from fans and players alike for his commentary style and analysis.
Kyrgios has been lending his voice for ESPN at the ongoing US Open. In addition to his role in the commentary booth, the Aussie has conducted on-court post-match interviews with several ATP and WTA stars like Coco Gauff, Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, and others. With the tournament already in the quarterfinal stage, a fan shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday how thrilled they are with Kyrgios' match analysis and commentary.
“I know Nick Kyrgios has been giving commentary during the Open, but holy smokes my man is made for this role. First time listening, the Aussie accent plus his knowledge and takes on the game/matches is pure” - the fan said
A few hours later, the Aussie reaffirmed his dedication to the role by retweeting the post and stating his intention to stay.
“Yup! Here to stay” - he said
Kyrgios hasn't given an official date for his return to the ATP Tour, but he did participate in an exhibition match for the Mixed Madness charity event in New York before the US Open.
Nick Kyrgios cites wins over tennis legends to defend his US Open presence in response to fan questions
As he continues his role commentating for ESPN at the 2024 US Open, Kyrgios recently clapped back at a fan who criticized his presence at the tournament. He responded saying he had beaten all the big players in the sport, which puts him in a good position to analyze the matches. Kyrgios, who is also an ambassador for Nike, Beats, and Yonex, stated that he is in New York because the brands require his appearances.
“Well, ESPN pay me to give my best knowledge and enthusiasm and character to the broadcasting scene. Also, I’ve beaten all the goats of the sport so I think I can add and break down the game. Also, I’m in New York, because I have brands that require me for appearances.” Kyrgios said
Nick Kyrgios has defeated each member of the tennis "Big Three" at least once during his career. He leads his head-to-head record against Novak Djokovic 2-1, while he won one out of seven matches against Roger Federer. Against Rafael Nadal, he has won three out of their nine encounters.
