Nick Kyrgios is under fire for his comments about Jannik Sinner's girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya. Due to the criticism, he found himself in a position where he had to defend his role as an 'expert' for ESPN at the US Open.
Kyrgios took to X (formerly Twitter) to put up a poll for his followers between the 2024 US Open men's singles finalists Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner. One of the fans in the comments posted a picture of the Aussie with his ex-girlfriend Kalinskaya, who is now dating World No. 1 Sinner.
Kyrgios commented under the photo:
"Second serve"
The Aussie was criticized by fans for his comments and he addressed the issue in a separate update on X.
"Don’t you think it’s hilarious how quickly people get triggered 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 with a couple words, or emojis…. Too much power," Kyrgios wrote.
He came under fire from one fan who called out ESPN for hiring him as an expert at the US Open. The fan wrote:
"This is the expert that ESPN have for the US Open btw."
Kyrgios clapped back at the fan by reminding them that he has earned big victories in his career and also wrote that he was excited for the women's singles finals between Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula.
"Yep, one of handful of players that have beaten all the greatest players - and I enjoy watching and breaking down the WTA tour as well 🙂 excited for the finals 🤩"
Nick Kyrgios dismisses accusations of 'bitterness' amid Jannik Sinner's doping controversy
Nick Kyrgios' stance in the controversy surrounding Jannik Sinner's failed drug tests has been clear from the very beginning. He was one of the first personalities to speak up against the way the situation was handled.
The Aussie has faced criticism for his comments regarding the controversy. One fan stated that his 'relentless fixation on Sinner' is a 'tragic fall from grace for a player whose tennis we once admired'.
"So, to Jannik: pay him no mind. Focus on your game. As for Kyrgios, his bitterness only serves to make him more irrelevant as the sport moves forward without him," they added.
One fan came to Nick Kyrgios' defense and the Aussie noticed the conversation. He responded:
"Haha I’m not bitter at all. It’s not about sinner. I just called his match 🤣 thoroughly enjoyed it. It could have been anyone in that position - I just want fairness. But as for you, I’ll reply and help you get engagement as you are really struggling in that department 🤣🤣🤷🏽♂️🏃."
Sinner, however, has refused to comment on Kyrgios' views regarding the saga stating that 'everyone is free to say everything'.
