Holger Rune and Novak Djokovic tried to recreate an old photo from two years ago while training at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters, and they couldn't stop laughing while doing so.
Rune, who shares a cordial relationship with the Serb, has never shied away from showering praise on the World No. 1. The two players have faced each other twice on the tour. While Djokovic won their first encounter in four sets in the opening round of the 2021 US Open, the Dane came from a set down in the final of the 2022 Paris Masters to win the biggest title of his career so far.
On Thursday (April 6), the 19-year-old took to social media to share a few photographs with Djokovic. In a photo from March 2021, the Serb can be seen assisting the youngster as the latter stretches his left leg. At the time, Rune captioned the image, "Always learn from the best.".
The duo decided to recreate it, with the Danish player writing, "The journey continues, April 2023."
"Always an inspiration sharing the court with you man @djokernole. History continues (picture 2 and 3)," Holger Rune wrote on Instagram.
The two were also seen posing alongside Stan Wawrinka, who was involved in a controversy with Rune at the 2023 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, but seemed to have buried the hatchet.
After missing out on the Sunshine Double due to his stance on COVID-19 vaccines, the 22-time Grand Slam champion has arrived for the third Masters 1000 tournament of the year in search of his third title in Monte Carlo. Rune, on the other hand, will be looking to go all the way and win his second big title.
11-time Monte Carlo champion Rafael Nadal as well as World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the tournament earlier this week due to injuries.
Holger Rune is a fan of Novak Djokovic's return
Speaking to Gio Journal recently, Holger Rune was asked about his favorite player while growing up. The World No. 8 remarked that he was a fan of the different qualities of different players, one of which was Novak Djokovic's return.
"First I was fan of Rafa. He was number one back then. I had Rafa posters all over my room," Rune said. "Then I became Roger fan and later I was fan of many players. To be more specific, I am fan of Verdasco's forehand, Zverev’s backhand, Novak’s return, Roger's movements, Rafa’s fighter attitude, etc."
Earlier this week, Rune and French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou parted ways after working together for six months.
