Tennis fans recently reacted to Iga Swiatek, Zheng Qinwen and Donna Vekic's medal celebration at the 2024 Paris Olympics after these three players were involved in controversies with American players Danielle Collins, Emma Navarro, and Coco Gauff. Swiatek had a dispute with Collins, Zheng with Navarro, and Vekic with Gauff.
Seeded sixth, Zheng Qinwen claimed the gold medal by defeating 13th seed Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 45 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. Meanwhile, top seed Iga Swiatek, who had previously lost in the second round at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and was defeated by the Chinese player in the semifinals of this year's Olympic Games, secured the bronze medal by defeating Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-1.
After the final match, Zheng Qinwen, Donna Vekic, and Iga Swiatek were awarded their gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively. They shared a heartwarming moment on the podium, where they took a selfie together with their medals.
One fan stated that they were hoping that Zheng Qinwen, Iga Swiatek, and Donna Vekic had sent their podium selfie to Emma Navarro, Danielle Collins, and Coco Gauff to show off their achievements despite being pulled in on controversies.
Collins had faced Swiatek in the quarterfinals and suffered an abdominal injury during the match. After the conclusion of the match, Collins exchanged what appeared to be strong words with Swiatek at the net. The American later shared that she had told the World No.1 that she didn't have to be "insincere" about her injury.
Meanwhile, Emma Navarro, who had faced off against Zheng Qinwen in the third round, made some strong remarks to the eventual gold medalist. She expressed that she didn't have "respect" for Zheng, criticized her "cut-throat" approach to the game and questioned how she could have fans of her own .
Whereas, Coco Gauff found herself in the midst of a line call controversy during her their round match against Donna Vekic.
"I hope that they sent it to [Coco] Gauff, [Danielle] Collins, and [Emma] Navarro ❤️ ," a fan posted.
Some fans had mocked Emma Navarro, labeling her as a "Karen." This term is often used to describe a white American woman who is seen as entitled or overly demanding.
"Where's Emma Navarro? Sorry I mean Karen Navarro," a fan wrote.
""I don't know how u have so many fans." Well she just gained a billion fans in China, IN YOUR FACE Navarro!! 😂 😂 ," a fan posted.
One fan stated that they were hoping to see Danielle Collins at the medal ceremony and see Iga Swiatek take home the bronze medal.
"I hope Danielle Collins is there for the medal ceremony," a fan wrote.
Many fans noted that American players more often than not find themselves involved in "drama."
"And they all got involved in unnecessary drama with Americans. You either go Karen or win medals…these 3 ladies showed what it’s all about!" a fan posted.
"Now Zheng and Swiatek can have coffee and talk about a common topic (American drama)," a fan wrote.
"Bless these girls!! Ultimate class when all of them were put through unnecessary drama in this tournament. Hard and well earned victories!!," another fan added.
One fan shared that they typically do not root against any players, however, there was a shift in sentiment towards Danielle Collins and Emma Navarro following their recent actions.
"I love women's tennis for one good reason, mostly I don't root against anyone so I have a good time either way. But I now root against two people. I'm not going to say who they are. It's Navarro and Danielle Collins," a fan posted.
Iga Swiatek & Zheng Qinwen take on their controversy with Danielle Collins & Emma Navaro, respectively
Speaking to the press following her interaction with Danielle Collins in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Iga Swiatek stated that she was stumped by Collins' remarks as she only wanted to congratulate the American on having a successful career.
Danielle Collins will potentially retire after the end of the 2024 season.
"I won't argue about it, because I've never done anything nasty to her. I rather wanted to congratulate her on her successful career, because we all know that this is her last year on tour, Honestly, I don't know what she meant, because we didn't even have any interactions that could have caused her to say that to me,” Iga Swiatek told the media (via Interia Sport).
Meanwhile, Zheng Qinwen stated that if Navarro was unhappy with her "cut-throat" behavior, then she could have addressed the issue with her so that she could learn from the mistakes she allegedly made and improve further.
"She [Emma Navarro] told me she doesn't know how I have a lot of fans. It looks like she's not happy with my behavior towards her. If she's not happy about my behavior, she can come and tell me. I would like to correct it to become a better player and a better person. I'm glad that she told me that. I will not consider it an attack because she lost the match," Zheng said (via Yahoo Sport).
Following their campaigns at the Paris Olympics, Iga Swiatek and Zheng Qinwen, who were scheduled to compete at the 2024 Canadian Open, have withdrawn from the WTA 1000 tournament.
