The women's singles draw for the 2024 Paris Olympics is out, and World No. 2 Coco Gauff seemingly has a great chance of mustering a deep run at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, her rival, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has been dealt a more difficult draw on paper. Unsurprisingly, these developments have drawn reactions from tennis fans.
It's not that Gauff's half of the draw does not have quality players - Jessica Pegula, reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova, and 2024 French Open and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini are just some of the names that the reigning US Open champion may eventually have to get past. However, Swiatek's half of the draw feels a tad bit more intimidating.
From former World No. 1s Angelique Kerber, Caroline Wozniacki and Naomi Osaka to 2022 Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina to 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko to 2022 Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins, the Pole's half is stacked with past and present heavyweights.
In light of this apparent disparity in fortunes, fans flooded X (formerly Twitter) with their reactions. Here is a post sharing the draw:
Some fans wondered how it has become a pattern for USA's youngest ever flag bearer Gauff to get seemingly easier draws than Swiatek over the course of the last few Majors and other prestigious tournaments.
"How does Coco always get mickey mouse draws and Iga always has to earn it?" a fan asked in reply.
"It’s not even funny anymore. And next thing will be Coco saying that “there is no easy draw in big tournaments”, lol," another wrote.
"Gauff has been living the dream since the USO. At this point, her draws are statistically improbable," a third fan chimed in.
Another set of fans bemoaned Swiatek's luck, opining that the Pole gets such seemingly tough draws far too often.
"Noskova, Ostapenko, Collins, Rybakina in Iga’s draw, as always. Nothing surprising," one wrote
They later added:
"What is the point of being the world number 1 when the world number 2 gets a FAR better draw four big tournaments in a row (AO/RG/W/OLY) it's so dumb"
"You don't even have to look up Swiatek's draws, you already know it's Collins/Penko/Noskova in her quarter and Rybakina in her half. Like clockwork," this fan weighed in.
There were other fans who expressed their excitement for some potential high-profile encounters along the way.
"Osaka v Kerber and the winner play against Rybakina?!!! OMG," one fan wrote.
"Wozniacki Collins 2nd round yes," another commented.
"You've made your childhood dream" - Coco Gauff's letter to younger self on missing out on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Recently, NBC Olympics shared a letter that Gauff wrote to her 17-year-old self not long ago. In the letter, the reigning World No. 2 touched on her dejection after she was diagnosed with COVID-19, which prevented her from participating at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (held in 2021).
However, she also wrote that the fact that she will be making her debut at the prestigious Games this year will mark the realization of her "childhood dream".
A part of Gauff's heartfelt letter reads:
"In your phone under your vision notes, you wrote that you want to win a medal at the Olympics. Gold, silver, bronze – it doesn’t matter. But you’ve already won, you’ve made your childhood dream of playing at the Olympics, representing the United States, a real reality. And now, finally, you get to enjoy it."
The 2024 Paris Olympics' tennis tournament is slated to begin on Saturday, July 27 with the order of play set to be revealed on Friday, July 26.
