As the Australian Open 2025 enters its business end, only the top guns are left in the draw. With the conclusion of the quarterfinals on Wednesday, January 22, high-profile names such as Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff, Emma Navarro, and Tommy Paul were among those to falter at this stage.
All singles players who lost in the quarterfinals made A$665,000 (approx. US$418,000). This is a sharp increase from the A$600,000 (approx. US$377,000) that the players received as prize money courtesy of a quarterfinal appearance last year.
Alcaraz's run at the Australian Open came to an end at the hands of Novak Djokovic. The loss also meant that he would have to wait another year for a shot at completing the Career Grand Slam. Gauff was one of the favorites to win the title and was riding a nine-match winning streak. However, Paula Badosa proved to be too good for her and beat her in straight sets.
Paul had Alexander Zverev on the ropes during their quarterfinal duel on numerous occasions. However, the American failed to capitalize on his chances and lost to him in four sets. Navarro ran into the in-form Iga Swiatek, who's taking no prisoners in Melbourne and went down tamely to her.
Swiatek has dropped only 14 games en route to the semifinals, and seven of those were in the first round itself. She has demolished everyone in her path over the last four rounds. The host nation's quest for a home champion also came to an end in the quarterfinals with the loss of Alex de Minaur.
Alex de Minaur, Elina Svitolina among those to lose in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2025
Alex de Minaur's rise as a top player over the past year gave the Aussies some hope that one of their own could make a play for the Australian Open crown. However, the World No. 8 ran into defending champion Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals and lost to him in straight sets. It marked his 10th consecutive defeat against the Italian.
Elina Svitolina had one foot in the semifinals after taking the first set against Madison Keys. However, the latter staged a comeback to win the match in three sets, eliminating the Ukrainian. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova gave a good account of herself as she pushed defending champion Aryna Sabalenka to the brink but ultimately came up short.
Lorenzo Sonego's dream run wrapped up with a quarterfinal loss to Ben Shelton. The Italian was contesting his maiden Major quarterfinal and lost to his younger rival in four sets. As mentioned earlier, the quarterfinalists added A$665,000 (approx. US$418,000) to their bank accounts thanks to their quarterfinal showing at the Melbourne Major this year.
