Rohan Bopanna has earned a prize money of 40,000 US dollars after exiting in the opening round of men’s doubles at the Australian Open 2025. On Tuesday, January 14, Bopanna and his new partner Nicolas Barrientos lost in straight sets to Spain’s Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar on Court 15.

It took the Spanish pair an hour and 15 minutes to beat Bopanna and Barrientos 7-5, 7-6 (5). Had Bopanna and Barrientos gone through to the second round, they would have earned a prize money of 58,000 US dollars. The champion and runners-up will get a prize money of 810,000 US dollars and 440,000 US dollars, respectively.

The semi-finalist and quarterfinalist will receive a prize money of 250,000 US dollars and 142,000 US dollars, respectively. 82,000 US dollars is the prize money for the team making an exit in the Round of 16.

Rohan Bopanna fails to create magic in Australian Open

Rohan Bopanna had a dream outing at Melbourne Park last time. He had become the oldest Grand Slam champion along with Australia’s Matthew Ebden and also became the oldest World No. 1. But this time around, Bopanna failed to make the same impact.

Last year, Bopanna parted ways with Ebden after the ATP Finals following which he chose Barrientos as his new doubles partner. Bopanna and Barrientos went into the hardcourt Major as the 14th seeds and faltered big time.

In the opening set against Martinez and Munar, they earned a service break and hit 27 winners, 10 more than their opponent. But the fact that they dropped their serve twice led to their downfall.

In the second set, Bopanna and Martinez did concede a break but earned one themselves to force a tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, they took a 4-1 lead and it seemed that the match would go into the third set.

But trailing 3-5, Martinez and Munar won four points in a row to book their berth in the second round.
