Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal will earn prize money of $132,000 after exiting in the first round of the men’s singles at the Australian Open 2025. On Sunday, January 12, Nagal failed to make his way through to the second round at Melbourne Park after losing to Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic in straight sets.
It took Machac two hours and 15 minutes to beat Nagal 6-3, 6-1, 7-5. Had Nagal gone through to the Round of 64, he would have assured himself a prize money of at least $200,000. The champion and runner-up will get a prize money of $3,500,000 and $1,90,000 respectively.
The semi-finalists and quarter-finalists will get $1,100,000 and $665,000 respectively. $420,000 and $290,000 are the prize money for the ones making an exit in the Round of 16 and Round of 32 respectively.
Sumit Nagal struggles in Australian Open 2025
Last year, Nagal defeated Alexander Bublik, a player ranked much higher than him, in the first round. But this time around, the youngster could not show much of a fight at the 1573 Arena. Machac dominated Nagal with 38 winners, 19 more than his opponent.
Nagal did manage to break Machac’s serve twice but dropped his serve seven times. Nagal was tentative with his second serves, winning a mere 37 percent points off them and making five double faults. Machac also dictated terms by smashing seven aces while Nagal could not pull off any.
Nagal made 20 unforced errors, 13 less than Machac, but they weren’t enough for him to go past the finish line. Last year, Nagal achieved his career-best ranking of No.68, but due to lack of form and poor performances, he went into the Australian Open as the World No.98.
