The Australian Open 2025 has been rocked by upsets right from the start. The conclusion of the third round on Saturday (January 18) witnessed the departure of more high-profile names. Major champions Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu, along with former Grand Slam finalists Taylor Fritz and Danielle Collins were among those to bow out in the third round.

All players who lost in the third round of singles received A$290,000 (approx. US$179,000). This is an increase from the A$255,000 (approx. US$157,000) that the players earned by reaching the third round last year.

For the second consecutive tournament, an injury forced Osaka to throw in the towel. She led Belinda Bencic by a break during their third-round showdown when the Japanese started showing signs of discomfort. She retired a couple of weeks ago in the final of the ASB Classic due to an abdominal injury, and it reared its ugly head once again.

Osaka tried to soldier on but after losing the set in the tie-break, she chose to retire. Danielle Collins, who became public enemy No. 1 following her antics in the second round, lost to compatriot Madison Keys 6-4, 6-4. Emma Raducanu's happiness of reaching the third round here for the first time was short lived as Iga Swiatek crushed her 6-1, 6-0.

World No. 4 Taylor Fritz, the runner-up at last year's US Open, was beaten by the in-form Gael Monfils 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), 6-4. The Frenchman won the title in Auckland at the start of the year, and extended his winning streak to eight matches. The Monfils household had more reason to celebrate later on as Elina Svitolina also scored an impressive win.

Gael Monfils' wife, Elina Svitolina, took to the court after his win over Taylor Fritz. She faced World No. 4 Jasmine Paolini in the third round, and staged a comeback to beat her 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. World No. 7 Jessica Pegula was another big name to crash out, and was shown the door by Olga Danilovic, who beat her 7-6 (3), 6-1.

Dayana Yastremska, who was a semifinalist at the Australian Open a year ago, went down to Elena Rybakina in straight sets in the third round. Veronika Kudermetova's resurgence came at the expense of 15th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia as the Russian scored a 6-4, 6-2 win over her.

Rising American star Alex Michelsen scored a routine win over 19th seed Karen Khachanov to continue his run at the Australian Open. Ben Shelton advanced to the fourth round for the second time in three years following a win over 16th seed Lorenzo Musetti.

Leylah Fernandez, Francisco Cerundolo, Arthur Fils, Tomas Machac, Marta Kostyuk, and Diana Shnaider were the other notable names to exit in the third round. As mentioned earlier, a third-round loss at this year's Australian Open earns the players a A$290,000 (approx. US$179,000) paycheck.
