During a recent mixed doubles tennis match, a woman furiously threw her racket at her opponent, reminding some fans of the heated exchange between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon 2022.
In a video being shared on social media, the woman throws her racket after the opposing male player directed a shot straight at her, leaving her enraged and fans online amused. On an Instagram post, the video has been shared more than 42k times, while it has recieved more than 72K likes and nearly 4000 comments. A post on X (formerly Twitter) that shared the video has received more than 180K views.
It is a common strategy in doubles tennis for one of the players to lurk close to the net and take advantage of loose shots. However, it is also not uncommon for that player to get struck by an opposition's shot accidentally or even sometimes intentionally.
In a video posted on Reddit, a woman didn’t take kindly to being hit by her male opponent's shot during a mixed doubles match on the Redhawks court. During that point, the player volleyed a shot straight at her.
In response, she threw her racket at him and followed that with abusive language, leaving the other players visibly confused. After picking up her racket, she threw it at her opponent again, forcing the man to dodge it, before she stormed off the court.
Fans on Reddit were amused by the exchange, with one even comparing it to the infamous Wimbledon match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios. That match was a dramatic four-setter filled with controversy, during which the Greek star appeared to repeatedly aim shots at Kyrgios' body, and which he later acknowledged as deliberate.
"How Tsitsipas expected Kyrgios to react each time he aimed at him," one fan wrote.
"Feel sorry for whoever has to live with this person," another fan wrote.
"Feel bad for whoever has people like these in their lives," a third fan wrote.
Some fans criticized the woman for her reaction.
"Some of the most fun points I’ve played is someone trying to blast a ball at me and I volley it back. Soft b***h shouldn’t play doubles lol," one fan wrote.
"Bruh. Maybe you shouldn't play tennis if you don't want to get hit by a ball on occasion, it's inevitable. It's also not personal, the dude didn't want to hurt her obviously 🙄" another fan wrote.
"What a baby lol. When I play mixed the guy on the other side tries to hit through me, as hard as he can. If you don’t expect that, you shouldn’t be playing doubles. Or tennis at all really," yet another fan wrote.
When Stefanos Tsitsipas acknowledged aiming for Nick Kyrgios' body during their Wimbledon 2022 3R encounter
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios featured in an enthralling battle at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. The third-round match was filled with controversial moments.
At one point during the match, Tsitsipas angrily hit the ball into the crowd. Kyrgios called for his opponent to be defaulted, but the Greek was let off with a warning as no one was harmed.
Meanwhile, both players were penalized for their behavior. Kyrgios received a warning, and Tsitsipas was handed a point penalty. Throughout the match, the Greek appeared to repeatedly aim shots at Kyrgios' body, which he later acknowledged as deliberate, in the post-match press conference. Tsitsipas said,
"I was aiming for the body of my opponent but I missed by a lot. By a lot, like it is. There's frustration behind that for sure and I'm not used to play this way but I cannot just sit there, act like a robot and act like someone that is completely cold and ignorant."
Kyrgios won the match 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7) and went on to reach the final of the event. The Aussie, however, lost to Novak Djokovic in the final that year.
