Mirra Andreeva began a coaching partnership with Conchita Martinez last year. And if the youngster's words are anything to go by, they enjoy a breezy dynamic with each other.
Having made a solid start to the season by reaching the Brisbane semifinal, Andreeva will have her eyes on bigger things. She spoke about being more mature, courtesy of her relationship with Martinez, in a recent interview with The Guardian.
The 17-year-old, however, was quick to add that there were still moments where she could throw a tantrum like any other teenager. She singled out moments where she would try to "piss off" Martinez after being told to do something that she did not enjoy, just to get back at her coach.
All said and done, Andreeva revealed that her relationship with Martinez has reached a point where they can laugh about little tiffs like that.
“I would say that I’m still a kid sometimes,” Mirra Andreeva said. “I can get angry. If [she] said something that I didn’t like.”
“I’m like: ‘OK, well, I’m going to do something that she doesn’t like as well.’ I try to piss her off. She’s like: ‘Oh, my God, what are you doing?’ We start laughing about it and we forget about all of that. I just can be a little pain in the ass sometimes. But she’s doing a good job so far. She’s OK,” she added
Mirra Andreeva talks about challenges of sticking to gameplan prepared by coach Conchita Martinez
Mirra Andreeva also spoke about the challenges she faced while sticking to the game plan prepared by coach Conchita Martinez and those who came before her in the same interview.
The youngster joked that she would often forget the pointers provided to her by the team when she stepped onto the court, and often ended up improvising in the moment.
“Sometimes I remember things. Most of the time I just go on court and I just know that maybe, for example, her forehand is better than her backhand so maybe I should stick to her backhand more,” Mirra Andreeva said.
“After, I kind of improvise what I do on court. I guess that’s the thing that helps me because I never think of what I have to do. I just go on court. I see how it is. I see what’s going on. I just decide there,” she added.
After reaching the Brisbane International semifinals, where she lost to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, Andreeva chose to withdraw from her next tournament in Adelaide. She will now be seen in action at the Australian Open.
