Nick Kyrgios has boasted about rightly predicting the outcome of Elena Rybakina vs Barbora Krejcikova's Wimbledon semifinal and hit back at critics who claimed he was not a very big admirer of the WTA.
Rybakina and Krejcikova treated fans to an enthralling match as the Czech came from a set down to reach the final at Wimbledon for the first time. The Kazakhstani won the first set after a dominating start, quickly racing to a 4-0 lead and finally winning the set 6-3.
The 2021 French Open champion upped her game in the second set, getting a break in the sixth game and winning the set 6-3. The third set followed a similar pattern, with the Czech breaking Rybakina's serve in the seventh game and winning the set 6-4.
Kyrgios, who is currently away from tennis due to an injury, picked up a commentary gig for Wimbledon with BBC. On X, the Aussie reveled in pride for getting the prediction of the semifinal match right. He also lavished praise on Krejcikova's grass game, revealing that they played together during junior tennis days.
"Hmm I called the Krejcikova v Rybakina to be an interesting match up on the panel today at espn…. Guess I know a thing or two about womens tennis as well…. I played juniors with Barbora and knew that she had the game to trouble on the grass," Kyrgios wrote.
Nick Kyrgios has previously been accused of putting down women's tennis. He once wrongly questioned Marketa Vondrousova winning more prize money than Novak Djokovic, saying the former played only two sets, while the latter played five at the Wimbledon 2023 final.
Kyrgios also mocked the depth in the WTA in light of Aryna Sabalenka not dropping a set in her first 11 encounters at Grand Slam. He came under fire from fans when he dropped a laughing emoji under a post displaying the 6-0, 6-0 score dished out by Iga Swiatek to Anastasia Potapova at the 2024 French Open.
Nick Kyrgios' cryptic response to empty seats during 2023 WTA Finals
Nick Kyrgios speaks his mind on social media, regardless of how controversial his opinions are. He has often caught the ire of tennis fans for his views regarding certain topics, especially women's tennis.
During the 2023 WTA Finals, Iga Swiatek urged fans to come out in numbers to support the players.
"I hope for the next matches we can make the stadium full, because there are many empty seats. Guys, please come and watch our game. We are giving 100% in every match," Swiatek said during the on-court interview.
The Aussie cryptically replied to the post and wrote:
"Merger."
This seemingly insinuated the rumored merger between ATP and WTA.
