Danielle Collins' decision to continue her career in 2025 has stunned the tennis world. Amid this, some fans didn't appreciate how the American had previously reacted to questions about her retirement throughout the year, and when the time finally came, she reneged on her word.
Earlier this year, Collins announced that she would be hanging up the racket to fulfill her dream of starting a family. She enjoyed the form of her career after this announcement and went on to win titles at the Miami Open and the Charleston Open, and also reached a career-high ranking of World No. 7.
The 30-year-old always got irked when questioned if there was a chance she saw herself postponing her retirement. The American had made it clear on many occasions that she wanted to have a child and that her decision was final.
However, due to her struggle with endometriosis, a chronic gynecological disease that makes it difficult to get pregnant, Danielle Collins has decided to call off her retirement for now and play the 2025 season.
Fans were shocked by the news and took to X (formerly Twitter) to react. One fan said that though they were happy the Collins was not retiring, they mentioned how they would never believe anything the American says again.
"On the one hand I'm very happy that Danielle prolongs her career. On the other hand I will never believe a single word that comes out of her mouth again,'" the fan commented.
Another fan claimed that the World No. 9's 'toxic' behavior was a way to bring attention to herself.
"'I want lots of attention because I don't get any or enough in my personal life..... And I also make a scene in a conference press to bring even more attention'. Every little thing this woman does screams TOXIC," the fan wrote.
Here are some other reactions from the fans. One of the fans also quipped that Danielle Collins's going back on her word was 'insincere', seemingly alluding to her comments on Iga Swiatek after their Paris Olympics match.
"She killed any reporter who dared ask “Since you’re playing great, any chance…..?” , a very legitimate question," a fan mentioned.
"Would it be considered insincere to get mad at everyone questioning if you'll delay your retirement, only to then delay your retirement?" a fan quipped.
"Yeah, she lied to us but love her on tour anyway," a fan said.
"Honestly... kinda gangster to have a full-out farewell season as a professional athlete, and then to just come back at the start of next year as if nothing happened and keep playing," a fan opined.
"The DANIMAL story has not reached its conclusion" - Danielle Collins announces that she will continue her career in 2025
In a post shared on Instagram on October 18, Danielle Collins opened up about how she was consulting some specialists over the past few months to understand the best next step.
"In addition to managing some lingering health challenges the past few months, I’ve recently been seeing a handful of specialists to better understand what my best path forward is to achieve my ultimate dream, starting a family," she said.
The American revealed that after discussing with experts, she had realized her desire to start a family would take a while longer. She then announced that her on-court story would continue next year.
"Dealing with endometriosis and fertility is a massive challenge for many women and something that I am actively traversing, but I am fully confident in the team I am working with. It is just going to take longer than I thought. So, the DANIMAL story has not reached its conclusion. I will be back on tour in 2025."
Danielle Collins is slated to represent Team America at the 2025 United Cup. She will join Coco Gauff, Desirae Krawczyk, Taylor Fritz, Denis Kudla, and Robert Galloway
