A few reports recenty began doing the rounds of social media surrounding Taylor Fritz, Alexander Zverev, and Tommy Paul playing at the Mexican Open in Acapulco and an exhibition event in Las Vegas on the same day. The World No. 4 American has now cleared the air, claiming that he would never sign up for such a proposition and that both tournaments will not clash for the ATP top players.
Earlier on Friday (January 25), tennis insider Jose Morgado revealed that Fritz and some of his top peers in men's tennis were entered for tournaments whose dates overlapped, namely, the ATP 500 tournament in Mexico that will run from February 24 to March 1, and the MGM Rewards Slam in Las Vegas, which will be played on March 1-2.
Taylor Fritz, however, has since corrected the above report on his X (formerly Twitter) account by clarifying that the men's singles action will take place on the second day of the Las Vegas exhibition event, i.e. March 2. The American also expressed his disappointment at fans "assuming the worst" about the pros. He wrote:
"Just to clarify, the women’s match is on the 1st and all the men’s matches are the 2nd. I wouldn’t sign up for an event that coincides with the finals of a potential tour event before the tournament EVEN starts 1.) that would be just setting yourself up for failure."
"And 2.) I’m pretty sure there’s rules against doing that in the first place. That being said I'm pretty disappointed that people can’t figure that out for themselves and just assume the worst that we are all double booking an exo during the finals of an important event as if we aren’t planning on doing well at the tournament or something ridiculous along those lines," Fritz added.
The Mexican Open, also known as the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, is an ATP 500 event that is played during the post-Australian Open hardcourt swing. The 2025 edition of the tournament boasts of stars like Taylor Fritz, 2021 champion Alexander Zverev and 2024 runner-up Tommy Paul.
Fritz, Zverev and Paul are also scheduled to make an appearance at the two-day exhibition event at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas, where they will be joined by Grand Slam champions Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka.
Taylor Fritz has endured a bittersweet start to his 2025 season
Taylor Fritz had a good campaign at the 2025 United Cup in early January, winning four of her five singles fixtures en route to guiding Team USA to their second title at the team event. The World No. 4 couldn't back up the above results at the Australian Open though, as he was upset by the unseeded Gael Monfils in the third round of the tournament in straight sets.
Fritz is next scheduled to play at the 2025 Dallas Open, which will run from February 3 to 9. The 27-year-old is the top seed at the ATP 250 tournament.
He has made two appearances at the event in the past, having reached the semifinals and the quarterfinals in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
