Carlos Alcaraz is determined to put on a show for the Spanish fans at the 2024 Paris Olympics tennis men's singles final. The Spaniard defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals in straight sets to reach the summit clash. Alcaraz, who has been in fine form of late, went into the Olympics having won the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back.
The 21-year-old brought this form to Paris, as he kicked off his campaign with a statement win against Lebanon's Hady Habib. He followed that up by ousting Tallon Griekspoor and Roman Safiullin in subsequent rounds. The Spaniard then had a tough quarterfinal match against Tommy Paul, but came through in a hard-fought two-setter.
Alcaraz faced Canada's Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals. The second seed easily beat the Canadian 6-1, 6-1 in an hour and 15 minutes to reach the final of the Paris Olympics, where he will be competing for the gold medal.
While talking to Alex Corretja of Eurosport, Carlos Alcaraz made a huge promise to his Spanish fans, saying that he is determined to give his all to win the gold medal.
"To the Spanish fans who follow me on TV, I tell them that I am going to put on a show in the final and that I am going to give them what they want: the gold," Alcaraz said.
Carlos Alcaraz becomes the youngest men's singles Olympics finalist since 1904
Carlos Alcaraz has become the youngest player to reach the men's singles final at the Olympics since Robert LeRoy in 1904, and he could become the youngest man to win gold if he comes out on top on August 4 (Sunday).
When told about this feat during an on-court interview, the Spaniard joked that he would act as if he didn't hear that, and spoke about the honor of playing in the final.
“I’m gonna act like I didn’t hear that. Honestly it’s gonna a be a really special moment for me in my life and career. I’ll try to enjoy this moment. It’s gonna be difficult for sure, but it’s gonna be special. I’ll try to focus on myself. I’ll try not to heat all the fans and people saying I’m gonna win. I just wanna give my 100% and my best tennis. Hopefully, I’ll reach my goal to get the gold.
Carlos Alcaraz will face the winner of the semifinal match between Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti for the gold medal on Sunday.
