Danielle Collins has built a reputation for being rather outspoken in many instances. The American rarely minces her words and hasn't been shy about it either. She's clashed with opponents during matches, such as shouting 'shut up' at an opponent, and has called out players in interviews as well.
Collins doesn't mind doing it to crowds either. After surviving a rather heated clash with Destanee Aiava at the Australian Open, she certainly got her money's worth during the post-match interview. She was asked about navigating a hostile crowd.
Collins admitted that it did inspire her because she wanted to win and get that bigger paycheck. She did it with the final score being 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-2.
"It was a tough crowd, and I figured if I'm going to be out here, I better take home that bigger paycheck. Thanks for the paycheck, Australia."
When asked further about playing against such crowds, Collins admitted that it motivated her to do better because she's just that type of player. When she has people rooting against her, it lights a fire and makes winning much more satisfying.
"I'm definitely somebody who needs a bit of a fire under my a**. All of this just motivates me to do better. It's a pretty amazing feeling as an athlete because the people who dislike or hate you pay your bills. That's a really rewarding feeling to be out here. It just feels like a really great day."
Danielle Collins to face Madison Keys next
The next match for the former finalist at the Australian Open, Danielle Collins, will be against Madison Keys. It's a really tough matchup, but at least there should be decent crowd support for Collins in this one. It's a battle of the Americans, so the fan support will be split between the two.
The native Aussies might root against Collins after she beat their player, but that is only going to help her if nothing else. Either way, once again it should be a very entertaining match for the fans, as the previous ones were as well.
Danielle Collins is a former finalist in Australia, while Keys won the two most recent matches between them. There's plenty to be excited about, with the fiery personality of Collins only adding more fuel to what might be a massive blaze of a match.
