Novak Djokovic showed concern about his knee injury resurfacing after he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Serb had recently suffered a medial meniscus tear on his right knee during his fourth-round match against Francisco Cerundolo which forced him to withdraw from the quarterfinals of the French Open this year.

However, the 37-year-old had surgery and went through rehab to get back in time for the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. Not only did he return, but the Serb also reached the final of the tournament where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

The World No. 2 marched back to Paris for the elusive gold medal. He had smooth sailing so far till the quarterfinals defeating Matthew Ebden, Rafael Nadal, and Dominik Koepfer. The top seed was en route to getting yet another comfortable victory against Stefanos Tsitsipas, but in the second set, he began limping and seemed to be in pain and called for the physio.

Djokovic turned the game around in the second set from 0-4 down and also 3-5 0-40 down to go on to win the match 6-3, 7-6(3) in two hours and two minutes.

After the watch, the 24-time Major champion expressed concern about the knee and said that he was in immense pain but was unaware of the reason. Djokovic said (via a post on X by journalist Sasa Ozmo):

“I am very worried, to be honest. I don’t know what to say. The pain was very strong for two games after it happened. I don’t know if I slipped or what happened.”
“It resembled Roland Garros, where I managed to close out the match, only to find out that the injury was serious. I pray to God for everything to be OK.”

Novak Djokovic will face Lorenzo Mussetti in the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will be the eighth meeting between the two men.

The Italian has been in sublime form at the Olympics. He kicked off his campaign by taking out Gael Monfils and Mariano Navone and followed it up with a win over Taylor Fritz. Mussetti defeated Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals 7-5, 7-5 to reach the final 4. He has yet to drop a set.

Djokovic boasts a 6-1 lead in their head-to-head. Their two most recent meetings came at the French Open and Wimbledon this year, both of which went the World No. 2's way.

The winner of this match will play the winner of the other semifinal between Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime for the gold medal. The losing semifinalists will play each other for the bronze medal.
