Tommy Paul has admitted that he is well-primed for his quarterfinal match against Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon. The American and the Spaniard have met four times so far on the ATP Tour, with their clash on Wednesday (July 9) marking their first encounter at a Grand Slam.

Paul has been in good form during this year's grasscourt season. The 27-year-old dropped just one set en route to the 2024 Queen's Club crown. And while the World No. 13 struggled in his first two matches at SW19, he is now in a good groove, having won his last two outings in straight sets.

During his on-court interview following his fourth-round victory, Tommy Paul was asked whether he could extend his nine-match unbeaten run against Carlos Alcaraz.

Realizing he had a daunting task ahead of himself, Paul played a bit coy as he praised his younger opponent. However, he was also quick to insist that he felt positive about his chances, as well.

"That would be really nice. I wouldn’t be mad about that at all," Tommy Paul said in response to the interviewer at Wimbledon. "It’s definitely gonna be a tough match. He’s the defending champ. He plays amazing on grass. But I feel like I’m playing pretty good right now too…"

Carlos Alcaraz, meanwhile, has also displayed a high level during the first week of Wimbledon. The third seed received stiff resistance from 16th-seeded Ugo Humbert and former World No. 10 Frances Tiafoe in his last two matches. However, he showed immense resilience to fend both of them off in four and five sets, respectively, to reach the last eight at SW19.

Tommy Paul is one of only few players on the ATP Tour that doesn't have a negative win/loss record against Carlos Alcaraz. The American and the Spaniard have split their last four meetings. Coincidentally, all of their meetings have taken place in Masters 1000 tournaments on hard courts.

Paul and Alcaraz faced off for the first time in the second round of the 2022 Cincinnati Masters, where the former saved a match point before winning 6-7(4), 7-6(7), 6-3. Their next match a few months later was not as close, though, with the young Spaniard coming through 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Miami Masters.

The American again got the better of his younger opponent in the last eight at the 2023 National Bank Open, beating him 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. However, Alcaraz took his revenge on Paul a week later in Cincinnati, coming through 7-6(6), 6-7(0), 6-3 in the Round of 16.
