Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios recently reshared his humorous practice clip from the 2022 Wimbledon Championships that highlighted the contrast between his style and that of Rafael Nadal. The 29-year-old was practicing with his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi at the time and hilariously justified his casual style of play shown in the video.
Both Nadal and Kyrgios will miss this year's grass Major in London. The Spaniard has been away from the tour since his early exit at the 2024 French Open against Alexander Zverev and will skip the Wimbledon Championships to focus on the 2024 Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, the Aussie will join ESPN as a guest commentator alongside John Isner to cover the grass Major.
Kyrgios reshared a video on Instagram in which he can be seen casually practicing with Costeen Hatzi. Nadal was also spotted practicing intensely with a series of backhands at the same venue on a different court.
"Throwback to when Rafa and Nick had different philosophies on practice back in 2022," the post was captioned.
While sharing the clip in his Instagram story, the former Wimbledon finalist joked that he fulfilled Hatzi's dream of playing at Wimbledon. Kyrgios wrote:
"@COSTEENHATZI she wanted to play in Wimbledon one day- I made her dream come true."
Kyrgios was scheduled to face Nadal in a blockbuster semifinal clash at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. However, the match did not take place as the 22-time Grand Slam champion had to withdraw due to an abdominal tear. Kyrgios advanced directly to the finals, where Novak Djokovic defeated him in four sets.
Rafael Nadal recently revealed the reason for not choosing a farewell ceremony after his first-round exit from the 2024 French Open
In an interview with Punto de Break, Rafael Nadal explained why he declined a farewell ceremony after his first-round exit from the 2024 French Open.
Nadal claimed that while he initially agreed to the idea proposed by tournament director Amelie Mauresmo, he ultimately decided against it, saying it would have been hurtful to call it a day.
"At first I said yes, but at the last minute I realized that I didn't want it. It would have hurt me to announce that it would be my last time in this tournament knowing that I didn't have the opportunity to prepare as I would have liked," Nadal said (via Punto de Break).
The 38-year-old added that he would attend a special farewell tribute if one was held after he retired:
"If the tribute takes place when I am retired, I will go as a retiree, I will be there. Before starting this Roland Garros, I was not sure of anything."
Earlier this year, Rafael Nadal indicated that the 2024 season would be his final year on the ATP tour. The 22-time Grand Slam champion will next compete at the Nordea Open in Bastad in preparation for the Paris Olympics. Nadal is a two-time Olympic gold medalist (the 2008 Beijing Games in the singles and the 2016 Rio Games in the doubles) and will look to win his third medal in Paris.
