Andy Roddick was criticized for his silence over Jannik Sinner's failed drug tests controversy and the American clapped back by claiming that he will not be sharing any 'kneejerk' opinions. He was furious over the comparison of the Italian's situation with Jack Draper's 'shanked ball replay'.
At the Cincinnati Open, Draper took on Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round. The match saw the Brit make an impressive comeback from a set down to reach match point in the deciding set. However, on match point, controversy ensued when he attempted a volley that had seemingly double-bounced.
The chair umpire claimed he saw nothing wrong with it and Auger-Aliassime's protests were futile as video replay was not available. Among others, Roddick took to X to remark that he always knew when he 'shanked a ball straight into the ground'. The American also asked for better use of technology.
As for Sinner, the World No. 1 is embroiled in controversy regarding failed drug tests. The Italian tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug called Clostebol twice in March. His provisional suspension on both occasions was overruled after his appeals were accepted.
It was revealed that his physiotherapist had inadvertently contaminated him with the substance. Sinner's punishment included losing his ranking points (400) and prize money ($325,000) earned at Indian Wells during which the tests were done. However, it was ruled that he did not intentionally consume the banned substance.
Roddick made no comments regarding Sinner's situation on X. One fan called him out and wrote that the American 'always' had 'an opinion on everything' while another reminded how Roddick was 'quick' to comment on Draper's situation but there were 'crickets from him on cheating Sinner tho'.
The American clapped back at the criticism and claimed that he would rather take a deeper dive and understand the situation better before sharing a 'kneejerk opinion'.
"You think I should share kneejerk opinions w you because you’re b*tching about it on Twitter or should I actually do a full segment on next pod that takes a deeper dive ? You’re comparing a shanked ball replay to a drug report? Like what planet are we on?" Andy Roddick wrote on X.
"I know how to write a show" - Andy Roddick explains why Jack Draper and Jannik Sinner's situations deserve different reactions
Andy Roddick's update on X about not wanting to share 'kneejerk opinions' regarding Jannik Sinner's drug controversy received criticism from a separate X account. They wrote:
"Do whatever you want with your opinions but getting salty when people point out that we notice who & what gets "knee jerks reactions" and who & what gets the full-length podcast levels of nuance is ...wild. the distinction itself is interesting."
However, Roddick responded by explaining how different the Sinner and Jack Draper situations are and how they warrant different reactions.
"One could fill an entire episode, and one is a nothing burger ….. I promise you I know how to write a show. The hypothetical Draper show …. “He shanked the ball into the ground. We need new rules. He didn’t cheat but would’ve won years of props had he replayed it. The end." There’s your 47-second show," Andy Roddick wrote.
Started earlier this year, Roddick's podcast 'Served with Andy Roddick' features the American having insightful conversations with different guests. He usually releases an episode weekly and an in-depth conversation about Sinner's drug test controversy can be expected in his next one.
