Danielle Collins bowed out of the 2024 US Open in the first round, losing to Caroline Dolehide 6-1, 5-7, 4-6. The loss marked her final appearance at her home Slam, as she had earlier announced her decision to retire from the sport at the end of the year.

Besides Collins, the likes of Dominic Thiem and Diego Schwartzman also played their final US Open matches this year. Thiem and Schwartzman received on-court farewells, but Collins was quick to make her way to the locker room after the defeat.

Addressing the lack of fanfare during her post-match press conference, Collins explained that she had requested not to have an on-court ceremony as she is not someone who enjoys celebrating her achievements.

The 30-year-old said she has struggled with feelings of "guilt" after achieving success. However, she also mentioned that she is still playing doubles, leaving the door open for a potential farewell.

"Yeah, I'm still in the doubles, and I had requested not to have any presentation on the court. I'm not somebody that, like, likes to celebrate my accomplishments," the American said.
"I've struggled with feeling guilt, you know, around success, and that's something I have had to work on," she added.

Collins said she would prefer a more private and low-key send-off before joking that the amount of attention that she has gotten over the course of her career was enough to last her a lifetime.

"I'm not great, honestly, at having, like, an all-about-me moment," she said. "I just, yeah, would prefer to do something like that maybe in private, you know. But I feel like I've gotten enough attention to last a lifetime."

Danielle Collins also addressed her imminent retirement from the sport, saying while everyone has encouraged her to reconsider her decision and continue playing, she is personally ready to move on to the next chapter of her life.

The American said her tennis journey has been great, but she has run out of gas and is a "little tired."

"I mean, I think everybody has been so encouraging, and, you know, it's a compliment that people want to see me play more," Collins said. "You know, but at the same time, I'm just kind of ready for that next chapter."
"You know, the journey has been great. Yeah, sorry, I'm a little bit out of gas. I got a little tired," she added.

Collins has enjoyed an incredible 2024 season, also winning the biggest title of her career at the 2024 Miami Open. She is currently placed 11th in the WTA rankings.
