Novak Djokovic delivered a heartfelt message to his country after securing gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The World No. 2 achieved this milestone on Sunday, August 4, defeating Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in the final at Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Born in 1987 in Belgrade, Serbia, Djokovic has now represented his country at the Olympic Games on five occasions. His victory at the Paris Olympics is only the second time he has reached the podium at the Games, with his first being a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

On Tuesday, Djokovic shared a video on social media, featuring his childhood moments playing tennis, his role as the flag bearer for Serbia at the 2012 London Olympics, and the final against Alcaraz. In the caption of the video, he expressed gratitude to Serbians for their support and wrote how honored he felt to win the gold medal. He also dedicated the achievement to them:

“I could never give up on the dream of winning this gold medal, just as the people of Serbia have never given up on me. Together, we believed in the impossible. While I may be the one holding this medal, I want every Serbian to know that it belongs to all of us. Representing our nation is the greatest honor in the world. This medal, these moments, this life—none of it would have been possible without your unwavering support. This is because of you. This is for you. Hvala vam Love, Nole”

Djokovic's triumph was historic: it added him to an elite group of tennis players who have achieved the "Golden Slam". This means winning all four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold. He now stands alongside Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams as the latest to complete the set.

Following the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 24-time Grand Slam winner will next compete in the Cincinnati Open, starting on August 11. Djokovic will be defending his title at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament and aiming to win the trophy for the fourth time in his career.

In the 2023 edition, he defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Gael Monfils, Taylor Fritz, and Alexander Zverev en route to the final. He won against Alcaraz 5–7, 7–6 (9–7), 7–6 (7–4) to lift the title.

Securing the gold medal on Sunday remains Nole's most significant achievement of the season. While he is an ATP title this year, Djokovic reached the finals at Wimbledon, the semifinals at the Australian Open, Monte Carlo Masters, and Geneva Open. He also reached the quarterfinal at Roland Garros before withdrawing due to an injury to his right knee.
